When you crash diet, your brain literally starts to eat itself. And when that happens, things can get ugly. This rare, mysterious feared and dangerous type of homo sapien called The Dieter! This specimen is trying to lose weight by starving their body of sorely needed calories. But science tells us that when we starve our body, our brain cells also starve, causing neurons in the brain to start eating themselves for energy. This self-cannibalization signals a survival mechanism in our brains that tells your body to start eating. We know it as being HANGRY!

HANGRY

Hangry is the terms of bad-tempered or irritable as a result of hunger. In this world,we are surrounded by dieters. When their blood glucose levels fall too low, they are susceptible to anger and aggression. So what makes them so ornery? It all starts in the brain. The less a dieter eats, the more their brain cells eat themselves, triggering the hunger response. When you are hungry, it is more difficult to concentrate and behave within socially acceptable norms. This is why the Center of Disease Control(CDC) recommends that people exercise and eat a healthy, balanced diet if they are trying to lose weight.

Upvote and resteem on this post if you think crash dieting is never a good idea. Thank you for reading my post.

Well, in the past couple of months or so, I read a book which is translated from its Japanese version entitled "Hunger Makes You Healthy" which gives a compelling argument to limit yourself to one meal per day. Maybe you can search on it. Nowadays fasting has been a popular way to lose weight and at the same time, making people healthier. What makes your article interesting is that it's quite contradictory to what I've learned for the past 1 year. Maybe there is more than one angle to look at this topic.

Hunger is not only caused by reduced intake of calorie but also can be caused by obesity. There is a hormone called Leptin, which is secreted by fat cells which signal the brain that we're full but if you're obese and just had a high carbohydrate food, insulin would be higher in the blood which could disturb the signal. That's why, people who are obese, even though they have lots of fat cell (which act as an energy storage and secrete high amount of leptin), they kept on getting hungry. I think aggressive behavior is more related to personality (self control will require greater energy if the individual have poor self control) rather than caused by hunger and if blood sugar is low to be used as energy sources, the body will tap on fat cell and thrive on ketone bodies. It will not eat itself, don't worry. Our body has a great survival capacity. Just my 2 cents. Nice post though.

Hi @n4zriofficial! Thank you for noticing my post :)

Actually, it is not recommended to practice in our life cause it can weaken our immune system, making your brain more expose to stress and increase our risk of depression and predisposing you to future binge-eating behaviors. Plus, crash diet can makes u dehydrate, causing loss of brain cells as brain contains 75% of water.

Do u ever heard about autophagy? It means self-eating. You can check https://theconversation.com/how-hunger-makes-your-brain-eat-itself-2661 for more information about it. I know that our brain can repair itself by cell replacement n regeneration but my point is, crash diet can kills our brain cells. Honestly in my opinion, crash diet is very bad. Yes, you can diet but dont do it extremely until you starve yourself. I may not agree with u when u said aggressive behavior is more related to personality as we tend to get stress, crave more for food and can't think properly when practice crash diet in our life. There are many ways we can do to lose some weight but we need to give respect to our body and food too. That is why we have this term called 'healthy diet'. :)

Correct me if im wrong cause im not a medical student tho. Im just an insomniac business student who have ridiculous thought on midnight hehe. I have interest to study about human behavior, more to psychology. Actually, I want to know what cause of people being hangry(hungry+angry) and thats how it lead me indirectly into medical knowledge. Btw, thank you for your opinion, appreciate it so much :)

I knew about autophagy, a Japanese scientist received Nobel prize for it. I think there is some kind of misunderstanding with terms diet here. I think you meant starving yourself, not dieting. Fasting would not reduced your immune system. A protein called Sirtuin act by repairing our DNA when we're not eating. That's the basis of Hunger make you healthy. I think you should check out Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) as well, it will gives you a valuable insight on fasting and ketogenic diet.
