Travelling cheap and tasty in Prague

in #food5 years ago

So we went to Prague last week and came upon some obstacles and now wanted to share our special tips with you.

Parking situation

We went by car and were rather unprepared and surprised by the parking situation in Prague. In the city they have a special system that marks almost all parking areas in a blue color which states that those areas are only for residentials to use so you will probably have a hard time finding places to park there for free.

It is recommended that tourists use so called "Park and ride" places to park their car a little further away from the center. They are all nearby Metro stations and tickets for the metro are affordable and you also get a discount by using P+R. The metro system in Prague iis special because the metro is designed in a convenient (only three lines) way so that you can reach all destinations by changing the line only once. For P+R they charge about 10 Kč/0,40 Euros during the day and a 100 Kč extra for overnight parking.

Besides that you also have the possibility to go to a parking garage or ask for a place at a hotel. At a parking garage you have to pay up to 40 Kč per hour which is really expensive if you plan to stay for a while and for hotels it is even more expensive depending on the hotel.
Another option is to use parking places where you have to pay at a parking meter. You pay around 80 cents per day  but the issue is that when we tried it there we could only pay for 2 days max. and we did not want to go to the parking meter every second day.

Our solution:with special advice from residentials we found ourselves a free parking place where the parking places weren't marked in blue and had no signs which would have marked it as for residentials only. The address is a road named Murmanská, 100 00 Praha 10- Vrsovice. You can get there over V Olsinách, 100 00 Strasnice. We tested it ourselves, payed no money and did not get towed away/ had a traffic ticket.

In general be aware of the blue line and the signs stating a parking place as for residentials only.

In- city grocery shopping

We made the experience that the prices in the supermarkets could vary up to 65 Kč for the same product. So we tested some supermarkets and found some cheaper shopping possibilities underneath the expensive ones. In general you probably are on the safe side when you go shopping a little further away from center or on a small not so crowded alley.
(so this are still probably more expensive shops then the ones far away from center but as for in the center they are relatively cheap)

Special restaurant tips

As we are passionate food lovers this probably was mainly a vacation for our guts. So we can recommend you some good restaurants. Be aware of tipping the waiter after your meal. The average tipping amount contains between 10 and 15 percent of the bill.

  1. Husinec restaurant - Mezibranska 1450/13, Prague 1 - traditional Czech Cuisine for a good price
  2. Restaurace U Dominikana - Jilska 235/7, Stare Mesto - traditional Czech Cuisine also not to expensive
  3. Kung Fu Pure Chinese Pasta, Rumunska, Vinohrady-  traditional Chinese
  • Number 3 was our personal favourite. We even wanted to go there again the day after we first had lunch there but sadly it was closed. They have cheap prices and awesome authentic food that does not compare to the regular asian-european/running sushi cuisine. It was better than my mothers self made food (same dish) even though she is chinese herself.
  1. Street food (Trdelnik, “Hot Dog”- Prague style, Potato with Sauerkraut, Prague ham)- more expensive but really delicious

Cannabis situation in Praha

In the Czech republic in general all kind of drugs are legalized until a certain amount. There are some mini markets and head shops where they now offer you CBD weed strains. But CBD weed is only for medical purposes and doesn’t make you high because it doesn’t contain THC. Nevertheless we have tried it to test it out because there is a minimal prozentual amount of THC (something like 0.5 to 1 percent). Or at least that is told by the sellers to get rid of it. You have to admit that it smells really good and also looks like the real deal. By no later than actually trying it you will taste and feel that there is no considerable amount of THC in it you have to really believe in the placebo to actually feel something and that also wears off really fast. So you have to decide for yourself if it is worth it for you or if you would rather invest your money in something more potent. If you want to buy real weed with a high percentage of THC you have to ask some black guys who are standing all over the city. Especially at “Vaclavske Namesti”. Or you can go into a club like “Chapeau Rogue” or “Cross Club”. Also bars like Jazz Clubs or Reggae Clubs are working.

Beer recommendations

The Czech republic is famous for its beer culture. We tried nearly all types of beer in Prague. But the following three were our favourite.
  1. Kozel
  2. Pilsner Urquell
  3. Staropramen
