The price of rice in the international market has gone up by ten to fifteen per tonne. Bangladesh started importing rice and prices being to rise in the world market, 300 companies allowed to import one million tons of rice.

The price of rice in the world market has suddenly started rising. Major rice exporters India, Thailand, Pakistan are increasing the export price of rice almost every day. The price of coarse rice has gone up by ten to fifteen per tonne in a week. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the United States Agency for International Development have provided two separate reports on the rise in rice prices. According to the report of both the companies, the price has suddenly started rising as Bangladesh has started importing rice by reducing the tariff.
On the other hand, a report released by the Food Ministry in Dhaka on Thursday on the food situation in the country has revealed almost the same picture. According to the report titled 'Daily Food Situation', the price of Indian rice has gone up by 1 to 3 per kg in the last one week.
Meanwhile, the process of importing rice has started at both public and private levels, but it has not had much impact on the retail market. Coarse rice is still being sold at Rs 45 to 50 per kg. However, in the wholesale market of Dhaka, the price has come down by Tk 1 to 2 per kg, said the traders. Paddy prices have been fluctuating in the country's major markets in the last one week. In the last one week, the price has gone down by Rs 100 to Rs 150 per gram, but in the last two days it has gone up by Tk 20 to Tk 30 again.

According to the Ministry of Food, about 300 businesses that applied between January 3 and 10 have been approved to import about 1 million tonnes of rice. They have been given the condition to import rice within a month.
Asked about this, Food Secretary Nazmanara Khanum told Prothom Alo that the imported rice will come to the market soon. Then the price of rice will start falling.

Meanwhile, a representative of Kushtia said that the price of rice has remained unchanged for a month in Mokam. Thick rice is being sold at Tk 39 per kg, kajalalata at Tk 48 and miniket at Tk 57 per kg.
The supply of paddy and rice has decreased in Naogaon and Kushtia, the two main areas where rice is sold at wholesale prices in the country. Sales are also low. In Naogaon and Kushtia districts, paddy is being sold at Tk 1,050 to Tk 1,100 per ounce.

According to a report released by the USDA on Wednesday titled 'Grain: World Market and Demand - January 2021', Bangladesh has suddenly announced the official import of five to six lakh tonnes of rice. The import duty has been reduced from six to twenty-five percent to give opportunity to the private sector as well. This could lead to huge imports of rice through the private sector. The report said that Bangladesh will mainly import the rice from India. The reason given is that the price of rice in India is lower than in Thailand and Pakistan. And that rice can be brought by truck and train. As a result, it will be able to import quickly.
