Holy Basil aka Tulsi isn’t your average supermarket basil. This sacred Hindu herb has a peppery flavor and has been used as a healing herb in India for thousands of years to treat colds, coughs, and the flu. According to Ayurvedic practices, Holy Basil promotes purity and lightness in the body. It cleanses the respiratory tract of toxins and relieves digestive gas and bloating.

The oil coming from the holy basil leaves is a rich source of eugenol, neroli, camphor, and a variety of terpenes and flavonoids. It has shown strong antiseptic properties against many kinds of disease-causing germs such as bacteria, fungi, and parasites.

While it has been used for ages for its healing effects, as its name implies the plant also has a spiritual significance. According to the Hindu mythology, the holy plant is an incarnation of the goddess Tulsi who is very close to Lord Vishnu. She offers divine protection.

Therefore, in almost every Hindu household you will find Tulsi or Holy Basil. In the morning the woman of the house will offer water, incense, and flowers to this sacred, healing plant, while in the evening oil lamps are lit next to it.

A good morning makes a good day! What a better way than to start your day with a divine superfood smoothie.
