Please help a newbie, I’m not sure why my post was flagged or what to do.

in #flagging7 years ago

I'm new to Steem, old to cryptos. My post was about a common newcomer question and how I respond to it. I used the question as my title. Someone with a lot of influence flagged my post and left an angry comment that my hypothetical was silly. I wholeheartedly agree with his comment, the question is silly. But none the less its a question I’ve been asked a lot over 5 years of pitching bitcoin to friends and family. I’ve seen Max Keiser talk about it, I’ve read it in many popular blogs in various ways. The post was nothing special, but still took me 20 mins or so to put together and comment on the first comments I received.

I have replied to the person who flagged me and politely asked what I’ve done wrong and how to avoid it. . . Although before I understood he was actually angry, I made an earlier reply where I laughed along with the flagger’s comment about my silly title. Potentially pissing him off further incidentally. Also, at first I used an image of a book and lantern from Pinterest, but thinking that might have been the issue, switched it to an image from pixabay which I know is public domain. Honestly not sure if I did something against the rules, bad etiquette, that the person didn’t like my title, or they read it fully and just didn’t like my post altogether.

Any help on how to proceed is greatly appreciated! :)

  1. Should I further attempt to contact the person who flagged me and/or delete my potentially misconstrued comment? I’ve been able to see that they have moved on to other posts and didn’t reply to me.

  2. Is it possible to spend money in some way to make my post visible again? I spent $100 worth of SBD on promotion that seemed to have no effect on views at all. Spent another $50 promoting this one in the hopes that some people with knowledge/influence can give me some tips.

  3. Would It make sense to maybe alter my post a little and try to repost it? Ultimately this seems to me to be a bad option as I would not be contributing valuable content if I’m just repeating myself. Not sure if this is advisable and could make the influential person even angrier to attack other posts of mine.

At then end of the day I really really want to use Steem and get into it, but its tough if things I spend time on aren’t visible. I can’t even share the flagged post on my other social media sites like I usually would. Im no scammer or spammer. I’ve been writing about cryptos for years on social media and would like to contribute thoughtful content. I'm passionate about cryptos and Steem!

Thanks so much for any help or suggestions! :) :) :)

This is a good question to ask. I wouldn't say that person has a lot of influence with a down vote, I viewed your down voters account just to see how much influence he may have. I am not sure why someone would disagree with that article. I suppose it could happen but unlikely. Good luck and don't let the small things eat you up. Worrying is paying a debt you don't owe. One down vote won't kill your reputation. I also agree that the flagging method needs some tweaking. If a post gets a flag is should be up for peer review and a reason it should be under review. I don't think the person being flagged should know who flagged them. I was going to flag a user earlier today for Copy Pasting articles and pictures. I didn't flag because they can see my down vote and might take action against me by flagging all of my stuff. Good luck to you and just keep writing about what your passionate about! You will gain followers that share similar interests and you will gain plenty of upvotes, comments, and followers.

Thanks for the nice comment, advice and reading my articles. I won't sweat the small stuff!. . There are a lot of fine lines to tread with the voting system design, i can see where it'd be difficult. In light of what you brought up, an anonymous system of voting maybe makes sense, but then you also introduce a lack of accountability which has its own difficulties. . . The solution will probably come naturally one day from use and discussion as the system grows.

True, True...Steemit is still in Beta, so what else can you expect?

Happy with it for now, been lots of fun. Doesn't seem to hard to get a post visible again....and yea it'll just keep getting better

Wow @qwaswert! I love "Worrying is paying a debt you don't owe." Great saying!

Honestly? Fuck'm. One pissy Steemit queen having cramps can't stop you from contributing, sharing, laughing & enjoying yourself. Whatever they did will wear off & worst case you can make a new account.

i like max keiser so i followed you here -- come and check out my page when your keen

"Artist Philosopher Prospector Musician....Keiser fan" yea man, I'm sure we'll get along great! following you now

Remistevens,

Well I guess it's right about you can't make everyone happy in life, especially some random stranger who is probably having a bad day i guess? Don't put too much thought into it; as haters will always hate. I can say most of the people and I aren't "offended" by any means so keep up the good work and stay positive!

Thanks demoni! I wont worry about it too much.....super super difficult to offend me honestly. I was looking at this more from a purely pragmatic standpoint. > How do i keep my posts public so it wasn't a total waste of my time.

In my opinion, you shouldn't overanalyze it if just one person flags you. Just because you received a downvote/flag does not mean that you did something wrong it can happen for different reasons.
I have read the flagged article and I do not see a problem with it. It seems like the person just disagrees with your opinion and thats why he flagged you (As A Newbie I think he shouldn#t do it in this case).
It is recommend to flag/downvote on posts that are abusive, include racism, scam, inappropriate material, copyright violations etc.
At the End of the Day nothing bad happened ,save your dollars and I hope that one incident dont stop you from getting a good experience with Steem.

Thanks! I was totally offended at first, turned off of steem. I must admit it. How could someone have my content removed just because they don't like it?!?!....i get it now. . . . .This post put it in much better perspective for me: https://steemit.com/steemit/@innuendo/how-to-fix-the-downvoting-issue

The downvote system doesn't work quite as intended. As noted in the post above, downvoting to reduce payment on content and downvoting to remove illegal/hateful/scam content is entirely different and should work differently.

I'm thinking though hopefully as the system grows, people of influence won't be so exponentially more powerful than everyone else. So that its not so significant when you are downvoted by someone who just doesn't like your content.

I think you should try to contact him again! Good luck!

Thanks! For reference anyone else new wondering how to send a message this post was helpful: https://steemit.com/steem-help/@steempowerwhale/how-to-contact-anyone-on-steemit-directly-the-visual-quick-help-guide

Wrote another more organized post about my experience in the hopes it can help others: https://steemit.com/steemit/@remistevens/what-to-do-if-your-post-has-been-flagged-and-is-hidden

Update: My post is visible again! The solution, although not pretty, was to use a paid service that has influence and upvotes your post for a fee. 2 SBD to @Randowhale saved my post from the great beyond....for now

glad you could solve the problem but if you really want create a lot of content you should consider to put your hard earned dollars into Steem power, yes they will be locked ,but your voting power will be more visible and people with lower ranking can t flag your content that easily

Oh cool, good to know thank you! Yea i have no issue locking any of it up, I'm here for the long term!

it takes 13 weeks to take it out , each week you can get 1/13, but if you have more steem power your upvotes have more influence, (gives more money), and additional to that you get more curation reward and you steem power also have an annual interest of I think 9 percent /year or 0.01 day. I dont know maybe this is something you are looking for. Note this can always change with evry new Steemit Update.

Edit 2. I think I made a mistake with the annual 9 percent of Interest, this number is the annual Inflation. In fact you get about 1-2 percent interest per year or like I mmentioned about 0.01 % a day

Oh its exactly what i was looking for thanks. Wanted a way to invest in my own blog and give it a head start. Just bought some Steem Power now with BTC. I notice when i went to upvote your last comment, it gave me slider 1-100% now. Whats that all about if you don't mind me asking? . . .I could look this stuff up of course if you do mind....Do i get 100% per day? If i upvoted you 100% is that it for me and i have nothing more to allot to people? Sorry, don't quite get it yet.

I did just read that tipping a low percent is rude. Tipped you 1%. Sorry about that!

Yeah I received 0.00 :) no problem ,I am to steem new as well, starting slowly and maybe with time I will grow as well.
If you have more then 500 steem power you get a slider. you can adjust then how much reward you want to give your readers or other post or upvote your own posts(nothing wrong with that if you put time into it). every time you vote with 100 percent it take 2 percent of your voting power, but regenerate every 24 hours automatically about 20 percent. If you vote with 50 % you will just "lose" 1 percent each time.
if you upvote me I get the REWArd but at the same time you dont lose any power or money.
Y

Woohoo! Thanks! Yea amazing system. Now my votes are worth something. Love it.

Thanks for the help, following you too of course!
