Don't beat yourself up. I think you are trying to do good. In my opinion flags are OK but not as a way to oppress the new, fresh or the weak. There should be an arbitrary level under which people do not touch the poor or the new. It can be devastatingly demotivating and we want as much people as possible to stay.
