Downvote Report Generator Update + The Misunderstood Creature of the Flag 🚩🕷️

in #flag6 years ago (edited)

This is another update about the new flag tool I have been working on...

At first, it was going to only be to check incoming flags on an account but there was a need to produce a report on outgoing that arose so decided to include that as well. Decided might as well check my own flags (Edit: It was pointed out that the number looked small and it was. This is due to the limit on get_account_history and that I need to use a loop to get the complete data). Bear in mind that at least half of my account SP had been delegated to healing accounts during a certain flag war.

That's a story for another day. Over the course of my account history, the below chart shows the flags issued from my primary account. I'd have thought the number would be greater but gotta remember I am a minnow afterall. The total value of flags include those against not only those against abuse but also general disagreement of rewards which is included in the thing I like to call negative curation.

Flagging is the misunderstood creature of the blockchain kind of like spiders in nature. Those with understanding know that spiders play a vital role in the ecosystem. Well, I did my homework for you so here's a bit of how we benefit from our eight legged friends.

Little known fact about me: Used to own a couple rosehair tarantulas. They were interesting little critters.

Before you decide to "Kill it with fire", maybe think about the bigger picture.

There are many benefits of spiders. First and foremost, spiders eat insects. While, the details can seem a little gruesome if you think about an unsuspecting insect being caught in a sticky web and consumed by an eight-legged arachnid, the fact is that spiders keep the numbers of bloodsucking, disease spreading, crop destroying pests under control.

As I am read that, I realize how extraordinarily apt the anology is. 🕷️

Abusers are constantly sucking value out from the platform while offering nothing in terms of growth that would increase the valuation of Steem. If we work together, we will catch these pests in the web of flaggy justice. This will starve them of being rewarded via means that negatively affect the sustainability of the platform.

Instead of providing you the 158 downvotes I have sent during my almost 2 years here last 10000 transactions, I will do something a bit more pragmatic. I am going to share only those abuse posts that have pending rewards. I highly encourage you take a look at them and curate accordingly.

158 in two years? I thought it would be higher than that.

I just looked at the data and you're absolutely right. I forgot that get_account_history has a 10000 transaction limit so I need to make a few adjustments. Dang it. lol

This was a solid read, thanks for posting it. This is the perspective I'm trying to educate people on, but my voice and reach isn't as large as yours. Glad you're doing what you're doing!

Thanks, Mako! I've been doing this for a while and am glad people are beginning to come around about flagging.

If the community were to unite and coordinate flagging, we could thwart so much abuse.

One of the biggest problems is some flaggers think that by lone wolfing it and not working with others that they would be able to effect the same change. They don't and never will. Well unless @ned gets to flagging the high level abusers.

Think his approach has been mostly hands off as I have observed much abuse get through the cracks and have been powerless to stop it. It's a damn shame and hope people like you and I can grow and rally against that sort of stuff in the future.

It's good that you have found a specific niche for flagging. I think that it is helpful to focus on certain patterns of abuse and sustained pressure via downvotes will discourage said patterns from continuing.

I remember we tried this approach against the SBD lottery vote farmers in the past with some success. Focused efforts do work. Analogy is the magnifying glass and sunlight. Think about it.
