Is CrossFit right for me?
The latest craze in workouts appears to be CrossFit and for good reason. Let's take a look at the workout and evaluate some of its pros and cons. CrossFit programs were designed to work on all parts of our bodies including strength, agility, power, and even our cardiovascular health. The beauty of the program is that it can tailored to the skill level and fitness level of any ordinary person from athlete to stay at home mom. An increased bonus is the wide variety of exercises which will never leave you bored with your workouts.
CrossFit offers an overwhelming amount of benefits. The first of which is the feel of a personal trainer without having to shell out that kind of money to have one. Each CrossFit class is taught by a certified professional. Another added benefit is the group environment which leads to close knit teams. Having teams when working out is crucial because of the support group that “teammates” provide. There will never be a lack of motivation in such a class. The focus on total fitness is the final benefit. CrossFit is designed in a way to work your entire body, something that would be very difficult to do on your own attending the gym.
Although CrossFit is a great program it does have some drawbacks. One major drawback is the competitive nature of the CrossFit classes. Competition breeds a certain amount of jealousy and will often lead people to attempting weights or tasks they just aren't capable of which often leads to injury. Pushing ourselves too far as a result will lead to bad form and dangerous exercises. Another possible drawback is, as with anything, not all people are created equal. It's obvious that some trainers are better than others and if you get stuck with one of a lesser quality, it may ruin your CrossFit experience.
Good post and your last point is right on track - I started my CrossFit training with a VERY competitive and overly driven coach which ended up with a serious injury for me. I stayed away from it all for a while then went to another gym which was a whole different environment. They were all about getting the form right before over exerting yourself... which proved to be far more enjoyable. I suppose it's about knowing your limits and ensuring you don't rush in to be a hero straight away - and certainly don't let anyone push you into being a hero prematurely! Keep up the great work and have fun with training!
