Learning about the Kia moana - fruits of the sea

in #fishing7 years ago (edited)

IMG_3031.JPGThis weekend was a long one here in #NewZealand, so we took the campervan, Annie-Daisy, all the way north of the North Island to Ahipara, Shipwreck Bay. It's call that because there is a mast poking up from the sand where a ship hit ground in 1908 and has remained buried ever since.
The Kia moana (sea food) here is plentiful, varied and delicious. We caught and ate five different species this weekend. Kina (sea urchins), piper, paua, flounder and kahawai. Some say the piper is only suitable for bait, but floured and cooked on the BBQ, they were truly delicious. Netting them is no easy task, especially in the strong currents of the west coast here, but the capable men we were with brought in two good hauls. The flounder, also cooked on the BBQ was a treat, so delicate in flavour. The Paua, with its beautiful shell, we eat raw. I find it a bit chewy, but still the taste is good, a bit like scallop, but tougher.
A fantastic weekend learning and another step closer to living a self-sufficient life!

The Far North is a beautiful place. I spent some time up there, camping out under the stars on 90 Mile Beach, many years ago. By the way, the word you're looking for is 𝓴𝓪𝓲𝓶𝓸𝓪𝓷𝓪 , not "Kia moana". The Māori word 𝒌𝒂𝒊 means "food", and the word 𝒎𝒐𝒂𝒏𝒂 means "ocean", so together it means "food from the ocean".
