The Mummy - 2017 (film): universally panned, but not by me
I am normally very critical of Tom Cruise films but can understand why they don't change the formula. I mean, if you had an opportunity to release essentially the same script over and over again, and it routinely made you a 200% return on investment you would probably do the same thing. That being said, this movie was ripped to shreds by critics and normal attendees as well. I, once again, disagree.
finally found one in Thai
I don't think it is terribly necessary to tell anyone the plot of this thing because well, we have already been subjected to 3 of these films prior to 2017 and they all follow essentially the same course. Someone wants to unleash an ancient power for some sort of personal nefarious reason, and it is up to a small group of heroes to put a stop to that. I suppose the only real difference this time is that the enemy was an attractive woman.
Sofia Boutella plays Ahmanet, an Egyptian royal with a past that includes summoning demons to assist her in murdering her family (including infants) in order to secure the throne for herself. This nearly succeeds but then she is condemned to be mummified while alive (where she will remain for eternity.) Of course some people don't heed the warnings and release her from her captivity in modern times.
It is very easy for me to understand why critics did not like this movie - because we have already seen it, thrice. The reason why I liked it was because the slapstick nature of the first 3 films starring Brenden Frasier wasn't present. While appreciated by many and the humor made the first 3 more suitable for kids, I found it annoying. I would have preferred if the movies had been dark, the way this one was.
The action comes at a steady pace, and the set locations are beautiful. Even though everyone stated they hated it, i quite enjoyed the bizarre addition of Russel Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll despite the fact that it makes zero sense in the timeline of things.
I found myself rooting for the mummy in this one. I don't know if it was because I found the "good guys" annoying, or because she is so pretty. It could be a combination of both. Of course I realized that Tom Cruise likely has a clause in every contract that he signs stating that "he cannot be defeated" on screen so I knew that the mummy would fail in her attempts to down Cruise.
I will admit that the only reason I went to see this in theaters was because I was in Korea at the time and there were not many options in English that weekend. It should come as no surprise that this movie follows a very predictable course. It does star Tom Cruise and it is called "The Mummy" after all. Despite all of this, I enjoyed it and wouldn't even mind if they made another one. Points have been reduced only because of a lack of originality and predictability.
Wow, with all the negative reviews I did no expect much from this movie. I must say that I enjoyed it and can only guess that the panning of this movie is based on some deep resentments toward Tom Cruise. I am on the other hand a fan and have seen most every movie he has been in throughout his career.
Yes you may take issue with his religion or whatever else you want. I on the other hand choose to watch the work and rate it on its merit. Bottom line it works and in my opinion is better than the Brendan Fraiser versions of years past, which I happened to have liked too. Give it a chance. It kept my attention and was enjoyed by all in attendance
Totally agree with your review! It was a huge surprise for me that the indie video game based on this movie exist. It's called The Mummy Demastered, and I really enjoyed it on Switch, though it's available in other platforms.
Highly recommend it if you like any kind of old fashioned pixel Metroidvanias 👍 Unfortunately, authors replaced Tom Cruise with random character model 😅
oh, thanks for the tip. love metroidvania games
lol, yes very true, i did too, that mumy was one fine ass mummy, I was angry at Tom Cruise not giving into her...i would have no doubt..
But I like the action, Tom Cruise in a scary movie, unexpected and very cool lol.,,i like the storyline too, quite realistic...but must the title have been the mummy? thats my only issue with the movie...8/10 for me
I somehow liked the trailer,it is thrilling to watch for a person like me who haven't watched the earlier movies whose story is related to this movies as you stated. anyways I loved the thorough review as always. keep flourishing.
Yea man this was a decent watch. I really liked the “original” about 15years back. But this was cool, I watched it on a plane, can’t think where now but remember thinking it was good! I always look for the few horror films on planes so whenever I find one it’s a result!
It has great action and great effects. It's fast moving and not slow. Tom did a great acting job, as always. It was so much better than the Brendan Fraser 1999 version by a long shot.
I saw Wonder Woman the next day and liked the Mummy a lot more.
There were a few things that I enjoyed here - the thrilling and awesomely filmed plane scene; Sofia Boutella as The Mummy; the admirable attempt at a different tone that actually could have worked had the execution been better - but for the most part, it's all gone a bit pear-shaped. That has a lot to do the terrible writing which not only delivers a story that's generic and of little interest, but is also filled with a ridiculous amount of things that make no sense or are just plain stupid such as the poor decision making skills of the characters, all of which fall into one of three distinct categories: boring, stereotypical or very silly (Russell Crowe's Jekyll... what were they thinking). It's greatest sin, however, is that it takes itself way too seriously meaning that it has none of the cheesy fun of the original, but also fails rather badly at being the scary monster-flick it was obviously trying so hard to be.
i disagree with most of what you wrote... but what fun would the world be if we all agreed? :)
@gooddream funny thing is I actually love the first two Mummy films and the 'Slapstick nature' as you say.
I like this one too but frankly not as much
Thanks bro
Will plan to watch this weekend
Very scary movie
