The Guilt Trip (film): Not great but it has its moments
This movie was released in 2012 and it completely passed me by until this year because it randomly popped up on Netflix at a friend's house. I laughed a bit, but mostly there wasn't anything terribly surprising about this film and it was extremely predictable.
I'll give a bit of the plot even though it isn't really important. Andy Brewster (Seth Rogan) is an organic chemist who is trying to get a great product sold that he developed. It is revealed very early on in the movie that he is not terribly good with his "pitch" skills.
At an early point in the movie he ends up in NYC to visit his incredibly overbearing mother played by Barbara Streisand who is single and kind of views everything that Andy does as the most important thing in the world. She calls him incessantly and it becomes clear that she is actually a bit nuts.
He had already decided to drive back accross the country going to "pitch meetings" along the way, eventually ending up back in California, where he lives. Andy asks his mother to join him for reasons that I will not ruin for you but are described early on in the film.
Basically, this film is ok. Seth Rogan's usual style of dry humor is showcased and Streisand does a decent job of being annoying while also lovable. I do not believe she is capable of winning an eating contest though.
This movie isn't fantastic but it does have some laughs. Just don't expect anything special from it.
Doesnt it bother you too that in the first picture in front of Seth's picture it says Barbara, and in front of Barbara says Seth :D

I'm certain that just anyone can relate to character of Joyce Brewster (Streisand) in that we all know or have a parent like that. Joyce ,a lovable however an overbearing mother ,embarked on a road trip with son Andrew (Rogan) across America. During the trip, the mother-son relationship opened up and deepened to resolve underlying issues. I kinda found this comedy somehow charming and funny. Streisand put in a good performance not much different from the character played in the Fockers franchise but good all the same, and Rogan his normal humorous self. If you have seen this movie yet, do not expect the quite the normal edgy comedy linked with his other movies. However, this movie has its moments and will one way or the other entertain you.
I was very much pleasantly surprised. Not a Barbara fan and NOT a "raunchy comedy" Seth Rogen fan. I was dragged by a girlfriend who loves Barbara. Thank goodness because I loved, loved, loved this film!!! It's funny and dramatic and real! It has heart! I felt like Joyce and Andy (Barbara and Seth Rogen) really were mother and son. Seth really is a great actor. Who knew? I rate the movie 8/10 though
I was really surprised at how sweet this little movie is. I don't know why it didn't get better reviews. Rogen plays Andrew Brewster, an awkward chemist trying to hawk a cleaning product (Scioclean) he has developed. Streisand plays his widowed mother Joyce, who spends a tremendous amount of time meddling in her son's life. In an attempt to help Joyce break out of her rut, Andrew suggests they take a Mother-Son road trip across the country together. Unfortunately, that description sells this movie about as well as Rogen's character sells Scioclean.
Streisand is very watchable as the chatterbox Jewish mother. She's a fantastic actor, experienced and relaxed, who knows how to sell a scene without being schmaltzy. Rogen is not his usual "hammy" self in The Guilt Trip. He plays the uncomfortably stiff Andrew flawlessly. Mother and son each believe they have the answer to the other's "problems". Like most road trips, they discover more about themselves and each other than they expected.
I haven't seen this one. Maybe it isn't great but I suppose it can provide some decent laughs at a saturday afternoon
