Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 / Infinity War Preparation – 2018 MCU Re-Watch
Week 10 of my Infinity War Preparation – 2018 MCU Re-Watch
We rejoin the motley crew two months after Guardians of the Galaxy (and four years before the events of Avengers: Infinity War).
After the smash hit first film James Gunn is let off the leash with basically no leg work to do for the overriding MCU arc. This results in a brighter, bolder and more personal film. However, it does also feel episodic and self-indulgent at times.
Although overall it probably worked better for me this time around due to the theme being clearer and it picking up little threads from GotG1, I simply wasn't in to this as much as most of the other films in my MCU rewatch.
Maybe it's the lack of grounding, as even when the other MCU films get crazy there's still a sense of knowing the rules and therefore the dangers. With the Guardians of the Galaxy it's anything goes...
To Infinity: Other than featuring two of Thanos' adopted children this is a basically standalone sequel.
Mid/Post-Credit Scene(s): GotG2 goes overboard with the extra scenes but it actually works quite well. Most of them seem to be pointing towards GotG3, although it's perhaps a shame Adam Warlock wasn't introduced in time to appear in Infinity War.
The only scene I don't like is the one that wastes the introduction of The Watchers and gives credence to a silly fan theory.
Next Up: Avengers: Age of Ultron
