'When We First Met' Review - What if Groundhog Day was a romantic comedy
When We First Met is a romantic comedy starring the always entertaining Adam DeVine as Noah and the charming Alexandra Daddario as Avery. The movie follows Noah in his pursuit to alter history and end up together with Avery, the girl he's been in love with for years. The reason he attempts to change the past is that Avery is marrying someone else, Ethan, due to Noah's inability to convey his feelings of love to her, she's only ever thought of him as friend.
Ethan, strung out after leaving Avery and Ethan's wedding, decides to go to the club where he and Avery went to when they first met and sit in the photo booth where they took pictures. Unbeknownst to him, after wishing out loud that he'd do things differently, the photo booth magically transports him back in time to the day they met.
Noah's first attempt to get Avery to fall in love with him, leads her to thinking he's a stalker as he knows just about everything about her from the get-go. After attempting to change the past, he wakes up in the present, but with the events of the past having had a change on the course to the present. Although Noah tries again and again to alter time, it never ends up the way he wants, as Avery always ends up with Ethan in the end.
While the movie gets no marks on creativity, due to the concept having been done again and again, the movie luckily has a great message woven into it. Instead of Noah ending up with the girl, just because he believes they were meant to be together, he realizes that it wasn't Avery he was in love with the whole time and that he shouldn't try and take away someone else's happiness due to his own selfish desires.
