Review Wind River (2017)

Taylor Sheridan rolled out the small details gradually, which then accumulated, and before we realized it, he had become a giant snowball.

The early part of Wind River seems to remind us of its Fargo Coen Brothers.Taking location in a remote outlying area, the opening scene clearly states that this will be a criminal movie. Similarity I also see from his claim: "inspired by true events". Even so, if Coen uses his "this is a true story" claim to tempt us because we know they've just made a human drama into a comedy, then for Wind River we need to be more alert. Pay close attention to the addition of the plural "s" behind the word "event". This is not a true story, but the story is much happening in the real world. The director, Taylor Sheridan admitted that the statement is a reference to "thousands of similar cases" involving sexual violence in women. Yes.Sheridan is as serious as that. Wind River is a serious movie. Seriously half dead.There's no room for a joke. This is Sheridan's third script as well as his debut directing a movie he wrote himself. I would like to know what the name Sheridan will give to the thematic trilogy which also contains Sicario and Hell or High Water . Nihilistic Western Trilogy, if possible. But it is likely to cross the movie adaptation of Cormac McCarthy novel. The American Justice Trilogy, perhaps more suitable.The three films take place in America that is far from justice, so the characters involved in it should seek their own justice.

Wind River is the name of a reservation of the Indian tribe located in the wetland area of Wyoming. Yet this is the same place as the Sicario / America / Mexico border or the Hell or High Water Texas desert; all three are equally distant, lonely, foreign, and relatively dangerous. In this place, the authorities can not do much. Sheridan was very good at building a solid sense of place . Hearing the Wind River we immediately associate it with snow. Aided by the cinematography of Ben Richardson , the scene is immersive, until we can feel how stinging the cold snow is. Pretty in the eye but deadly.


Therefore, this is not a friendly place for a girl with thin clothes and barefoot to run around in the middle of the night. He ran desperately like avoiding something terrible. Whatever it is, it must be dangerous to force it to run until the cold air damages the lungs and then kills him.

A few days later, the deceased was found by Cory Lambert ( Jeremy Renner ), a forest officer who was asked by the villagers to hunt down the mountain lions who ate the cattle. Of course, the FBI agent, Jane Banner ( Elizabeth Olsen ) gets dizzy. Jane may have a capable capability, but she is not ready for the situation in Wind River.When it comes, he wears a fashionable blouse and high heels. "He'll be in five minutes," Cory said. The inquiry was Jane's responsibility, but she knew she needed help from the local police chief, Ben ( Graham Greene ) and especially Cory who calmly told her many times that she was the "hunter". Just as I described the set-up at length and slowly, Sheridan also presented the movie without haste. The Wind River plot is actually very simple, but Sheridan tells it quietly, step by step so we can get a strong grip on the location and character. There are not many action-oriented scenes, but the film keeps our attention with the slow-but-sure plot development, until it explodes in a sequence involving firefights and sniper gahar shots. It's satisfying because we're so late with the movie.

The film is a character-based thriller, even the Wind River village becomes its own character. Locations allow him to flick the sensitive issue of indigenous discrimination. This is a very specific place, but the social situation is universal.The character Jane, who is a woman, is not just a screen sweetener let alone romance / sex providers for Cory. It has a powerful function to give viewers the perspective of how to view cases involving the killing of a woman. Olsen gets a role similar to Emily Blunt in Sicario : a tough woman who is trapped in a hard world that she is not ready for yet.

Renner gave an interesting appearance. His character does not show much expression, but we can feel a lot of emotion he carries. This "hunt" became personal for Cory because he had a deeper motive. He knew that his mysteriously killed daughter would not be resolved, but it was possible that Natalie's case resolution would give him some kind of redemption. Probably not for him, as he claims to be aware that life should continue whatever happens, but at least for Natalie's father ( Gil Birmingham ). Birmingham has two very strong minimalist scenes.

The story may be the most straightforward in the narrative among the Sheridan trilogy, because we are presented with monologues and many poetic dialogues to capture subtext and what character it feels. The ending section seemed elongated, maybe Sheridan felt that the movie had not been completed perfectly. But there is something amazing about how to tell a story. Each image highlight, every plot development, every character interaction, all under control. Sheridan rolls out small details gradually, which then accumulates, and before we realize it, he has become a giant snowball.
