Worked well, but no characteristics that make it completely different from other cinematic agents.

Maybe the CIA should have let him do what he was doing. Mitch Rapp ( Dylan O'Brien ) is a vigilant , a street fighter who crushes international terrorists from one nest to another with arms and personal accommodation. But make no mistake, Mitch is so skilled that he can infiltrate the terrorist's nest that is the ultimate target. He is basically a wannabe Batman terrorist specialist. The CIA needs more people like this; they do not have to bother anymore direct hands down. On the other hand, Mitch is also too dear to be sacrificed, though he is more likely to endanger his life and missions because he can not control himself.

Mitch Rapp is a fictional character created by Vince Flynn as the main character for dozens of novel series. American Assassin is his first appearance on the big screen, and it seems to be the opening act for the character-based spy franchise, as well as Jack Ryan's Tom Clancy or Jack Child Lee Child's Lee Reacher. Mitch is a pretty tough and effective but aggressive agent and his mind is not too long. Sort of a careless version of Bourne. Apart from that, just like the movie itself, there are no other characteristics that make it completely different from other cinematic agents.

We first got to know Mitch 18 months earlier, as he was going to propose to his girlfriend at a luxury resort on the beach of Ibiza. However, suddenly the beach was raided by Muslim terrorists who immediately fired at the visitors blindly in a one-take sequence whose cruelty was beyond my expectations before watching. Mitch survived despite suffering severe gunshot wounds. However, among the dozens who died, one of the victims was his girlfriend.


Now Mitch has become a tough guy. How do you know? Know from his attitude that likes to provoke a commotion. In the MMA sasana, he beat up his sparring friends. In the shooting area, he carelessly fired at all targets (though everything was on target). At home, he rowdy punches his sansak to make his neighbors protest. Oh, and he also grows a dense beard, because tough people always have thick beards. His desire is to kill the terrorist who has slaughtered his girlfriend. To be more convincing when infiltrated into their nest later, Mitch has also been deeper in Islam.

He left for Libya with his own capital. Cool again, he managed to deal directly with the terrorists. That's how tough Mitch is. He was ready to kill Mansur the terrorist leader and everyone who was there, but the CIA was again doing something that specializes in them: interfering in the affairs of others. Dor! Come to think of it now, maybe this is the reason why Mitch is hot and always stubborn in carrying out his mission later.

It turned out that the CIA had long monitored Mitch's activities. He was taken to the CIA office. But instead of being arrested, the CIA intends to train Mitch into a real agent. "He is the best vigilante I've ever seen," said CIA Secretary Irene ( Sanaa Lathan ) who then brought Mitch to Batman's direct training, Michael Keaton as a war veteran Stan Hurley who has a special training facility in the woods. This part of the training facility injects a bit of originality for its relatively standard plot. The exercises given were pretty barbaric, where the students had to fight each other brutally while Hurley did a verbal provocation to fire a gun just to distract their focus. But this facility is actually also sophisticated. There are shooting exercises with virtual reality devices to simulate in the studio soundstage area.


The story can not be more cliché with a source of conflict involving nuclear triggers. We are even given the antagonist nicknamed "The Ghost" ( Taylor Kistch ) who is a former agent who is now an international criminal. He just stole the trigger from the Russian mafia, and now intends to sell it to the highest bidder. Stan feels Mitch is not ready for this mission yet, but Irene believes he has. No need to ask why.
What is needed by this kind of film is only the main character and the convincing action sequences. Dylan O'Brien is interesting to look at. He is no longer a puberty teenager you remember running around in The Maze Runner , but really looks tough as an action star despite still having a boy-style girl hair. He gives focus and anger enough for his character. Meanwhile, Keaton seems to know he is playing in what kind of movie. Scott Adkins and Shiva Negar appear short as supporting cast.

The action scene takes place in a typical action movie universe, where our characters shoot each other in the crowd but do not attract the attention of the police. If I remember correctly, there are only 4 policemen here, and none is crucial to the story. Maybe they do not want to interfere with the CIA. Even so, he worked well. Director Michael Cuesta mostly designed his aggressive action sequences in close-up spotlight, more often involving close-range combat. There's a big scene in the climax, more than just a car crash or a building collapse, made with lots of CGI and we're not expecting to get in a movie like this. This scene I will not reveal, which obviously makes me stunned.

I can imagine how this movie might offend many people, especially in today's times where everyone can be offended almost for anything. The election of its antagonists based on the American sociopolitical paradigm will provoke controversy especially in the Islamic state. There are also scenes that show violence against women, which is narratively plausible, but still makes my tongue a bit wry while watching it.

But we better not think about it, because the movie itself is also not really thinking about it. That element is just plot mechanics to serve us a action film that is more dependent on action than it involves the human aspect let alone the political contemplation. And the action is pretty fun to watch. Moreover, not many you will remember from this movie when you step out of the door of the cinema.
