Roast Fish, Wine and Movies
I went to an event the other night called Roast Fish, Wine and Movies. On my little island of Jamaica you don't get to see locally made movies much, so everytime I do find some I make every effort to go watch.
Jamaican Cinema is changing from a gun man culture to something more nuanced, with meaningful, thought provoking stories with such films as "Unbound" a story about a detective with a dark past hunting down a human trafficker Directed by David Johnson (which you can find on Amazon or Kweli TV) , "Kinto" the story about a young boy living on the street being abused by other street kids directed by Joshua Paul , "Savannah" a story of childhood friends who reunite and rekindle old feelings as adults directed by Mykal Kushnie, "Sea People" about an autistic child whose father is in denial directed by Stacy-Ann Sutherland, Documentaries directed by Gabrielle Blackwood and so much more.
I am proud of where Jamaica is heading. Young filmmakers showcasing their own films in a country where they have to pay to air on local TV and the local cinema franchise does not give them access.
Big up to Kush arts and JAFTA Propella. Filmmakers making a difference in a small community. A wonderful night of food, music, wine and friends.
