Surely I’m traveling north, he thought—or is it east?
The small, densely grouped trees are older than their size suggests; the harsh, high-elevation winters have kept them sleeping and slowed their growth. They have watched many men walk into their cover over the years, and fewer walk out.
Great story, @douglasbalmain, I like this theme of ancient trees, with eyes and ears, our forgotten keepers of history. Looking forward to more, now that you've entered the world of microfiction. A sad truth. Though, a lot of people step in without the intention of stepping back out - I used to have dreams of running away into a forest and becoming the romanticised woodland-hermit. :)
This world does make those romanticised ideals a temptation.
