If you can't beat them...

in #fiction6 years ago

At his desk he sat scrolling through the feeds of the popular sites. Smiling faces, Lamborghinis, mansions, tropical beaches, a land of desire. The smiling faces, the white teeth and healthy glow of the skin.

He began flicking through the open browser tabs. War, famine, starvation, slavery, illness, debt, forecloses. Struggle after struggle, continual suffering. Men, women and children living and dying like animals, roadkill in the path of progress. Forever caged by the system.

He glanced at the newspaper that sat at his side and read the headline.

"82% of the world's wealth in the hands of 1% of the people."

Tears welled in his eyes as he followed the pathways and the shortcomings of society. A constant crushing of the weak in the will for more, blind eyes turned to the harm caused as optimization for profit stole opportunity of life. Humanity populated by soulless machines programmed to consume it all.

"What can I do?" He asked of himself as he closed his eyes and considered his next move.

He open his eyes and had his answer. "I will not be consumed"

He started immediately, learned all he could and began small. He grew his capital, he collected and collected and he heartlessly cut down any that stood in his path.

His family looked on, they tried to show the errors of his ways. His mother asked what had happened to her son - The boy she had known, the one filled with care and compassion, the one who had wanted to save the world was gone. He had become single minded, uncaring, cold, unloving and filled with an insatiable greed.

Despite the protests from those that cared, despite the concern shown by family and friend alike, he cut them away like dead branches from a tree. They were a distraction to his mind, a hindrance to his movements - they must go, or he can't grow.

He attended all the glitz and glamour as he became an A-list celebrity, a corporate up and comer, but lived alone in his mansion. People praised his position, and he topped the rich lists of the young, a true rags to riches epic. But it was not over, it was not enough, he needed more, always more. Much, much more.

Company after company was ruthlessly consumed, torn down and apart to create a conglomerate, a mega structure with global reach. Jobs were lost as supply chains screwed downwards and robots and AI replaced the beating hearts that once filled positions. No body was safe, utility or nothing. Add value or you are gone.

Every dirty trick in the book, every off-shore account, backdoor deal, bribery, insider trading, slavery and child labour. Anything that could gain a little more traction, a little more power, no matter the cost.

The tides of popularity turned as year after year, he destroyed the lives of pauper and banker alike. If the media complained, he bought and destroyed them and soon all were too fearful to move. The governments followed suit as he greased palms and scandalized adversary. He broke anything that stood between him and complete domination.

The decades passed by as his greed kept eating all that stood ahead. The tentacles of his power gripped everything it could and continuously reached out for more and more to bring into their fold.

Lives were lost, wars came and went as his privatized military removed all threat, bend the knee or lose your legs. Enemies became servants of his state and his state was all. None were spared, none left to oppose, there were no more borders, just one flag, a corporate logo to which all belonged.

Now an old man in his tower up high, he looked at the world he had created. He controlled it all, every penny, every debt, every service and commodity, every life was his to do with as he chose. Finally, in these dying moments of his existence he succeeded in achieving what he had set out to do and it had come at a heavy price.

He remembered back to that idealistic boy, the one who had tears in his eyes at the state of the world, the one who had asked, what could be done. He thought of his mother, friends and the countless millions he had harmed to be here today. How much suffering had he caused, he could not say but, when he had closed his eyes at his desk all those years ago, he found only one path forward.

Beat them again and again and again until there is nothing left to beat.

Now he was ready for the last move in his plan, the laying down of the King.

"Wipe it all, you are free to do as you please, you neither own nor owe anything. The game has been reset".

This was written a long time ago but came to mind today.

Sort:

I started to lean toward a mentality like this in my mid to late teens but changed course after I experienced the destruction it caused.

P.S. I am 33 years old now @tarazkp.

Yeah, it isn't a recommendation piece ;)

"Wipe it all, you are free to do as you please, you neither own nor owe anything. The game has been reset".

Made me think of the end of V for Vendetta (the graphic novel, not that damn movie) where V tells the people "... you much choose what comes next. Lives of our own, or a return to chains. Choose carefully."

I think the reset is quite close at hand at this point, I just wonder/worry how bloody and destructive it is going to be.

It is likely to be pretty destructive, especially in a world where many have avoided hardship and are encouraged to 'feel' everything and act on their feelings.

Natural selection in action, perhaps?

Oh boy! thank goodness it's all fiction and you are just scratching the surface without take a penetrative dive down the DeepWeb yet. LoL

It's sad, but it seems that capital will always find a way to dominate. It seems to be a glitch in human nature, as expressed by the man in your story

glitch in human behaviour or trained behaviour, same ends it seems.

What is this?... , 'the memoirs of George Soros?

Can't do any of it unless people are willing to buy what is being sold.

Does lying about the product you're selling, carry any moral weight...?
Is there a responsibility to tell the truth with the product you sell??

Or is truth subjective (as you stated your belief to be), and therefor there can be no lying, not really, just interpretations...A playground for the sociopath, without a doubt...

Survival of the fittest without moral code, is a very harsh one indeed.

A 'might is right', kinda of thing...?

Not once have I stated the truth to be subjective. I have said it is unknowable by a human. As you shouted yesterday, tell 'your' truth or similar.

Driving now.

don't drive and post, or you might hit a post...!

lol...if it is unknowable , then there is no objective truth with which to work

Therefor...if there is no objective truth, then .....(I'll let you complete the sentence with the logical conclusion, when you're not driving...)

Truth is singular. You can't know it as it is though. That truth is objective. You can't know it except from your perspective. "Your truth" is subjective no matter how much you think it is true. I think you are the one that sees truth as subjective.

Truth is singula.rYou can't know it as it is though

...what does that even mean? lol.

So lying (from your truth as you perceive it), is morally wrong?

Lets not get off track...

I enjoyed the read, Taraz :)

What a nice thought. But all of this has happened before, and it will all happen again. Our glorious leader accomplished nothing of consequence. Man will fall again, into greed and war and evil, over and over. We will never learn.

He should have just ended the cycle.

Man will fall again, into greed and war and evil, over and over. We will never learn.

there is very little chance of ever learning in a world that encourages satisfaction of desire above all else.

I think there is a very good chance of mankind learning @tarazkp since many of the pleasures that people seek result in an equal amount of suffering for the seeker.

It has been a few thousand years, the uptake is slow :D

I think the Internet, and the possibility of freeing mankind from excessive (often boring) labor with the help of automation and technology will help. The next decade will be interesting!

I am not sure that is strictly true. If this world encourages the satisfaction of desire above all else, why are hedonists widely considered immoral?

Different desires for different people. Stone people desire to control and label with their version of morality.

Thanks for this. Reminds / reinforces my motivations for departing Wall St in NYC, way back in 2006.
I've now lived (in my own shoes) the life of the "top 1%" as well as the bottom 99 -- paycheck to paycheck, or lower.
My Spirit-being drew me away from the former. And but for the depth & strength of my Spirit-being, I would not have withstood the pressures of the latter.
I'll keep it real and keep moving forward.

Peace and smiles

I've now lived (in my own shoes) the life of the "top 1%" as well as the bottom 99 -- paycheck to paycheck, or lower.

I would predict that happiness is available anywhere along the spectrum if one chooses.

Of this there is NO DOUBT.

Gives plenty of perspectives on how a humble or noble effort can turn into something for the worst when only considering oneself. While I try to improve my financial position every day, I also try to make efforts to give back!

I wonder if 1000 years later, the person would be considered saint or sinner.

I've been watching videos of different places on the planet and there are a lot of people who slave away their whole lives just to stay alive. It's strange that some have so much while others have so little. For me it's a reminder to be thankful for what I have.

yeah ad the type of work that needs to be done. AI and robotics could open up an age of abundance, I assume it will instead be used to narrow the top and build high walls between.

One can't help but feel the reset is near again. That said, it has been near for many years now. Nice post Taraz. SK.

Eventually the right point will buckle and the cards come down.

We can only hope. The Socialists and Crony Capitalists have swindled nearly every cent they can from the good and honest middle-class, by pandering to the poor. Who funnily enough - remain poor.
