Journeys Chapter One p21
Later that night, before going to sleep, Patryg made a round through the camp, followed by his two guards. Hoping to find the captain-of-the-guard, he rode the perimeter. When he found who he was looking for , he was surprised to find that it was his son.
“Jaymes,” he called out. Hearing his name called, Jaymes looked up from his paperwork, and waved his dad over. Patryg walked over to the small desk inside the tent, and inquired, “Who put you in charge of the guard?”
James finished what he was writing, then answered, “Sir Garan made the assignment, sir.”
“Do you have a few minutes to take a walk with me?” The Grand Master inquired.
Jaymes nodded, “Of course, sir.” He marked his place, and then rose from the table, falling into step beside his dad.
Patryg walked the inside of the palisade, and nodded, “Very good, son. You did a good job on the spacing. Everything looks good.” He paused a moment, “We may have to do the initiation on the run. I'll discuss it with the other Masters. In the meantime, start tearing down the palisade at sunup, we'll be moving out after we break fast.”
Jaymes nodded, “Aye, sir. I'll take care of it. I guess I can always sleep in the saddle.”
Patryg chuckled. “It won't be the last time you'll ever do that.” He reached out and patted his son on the shoulder. “If your guards need to sleep, they can hitch a ride on the wagons tomorrow, as can you.”
The novitiate nodded, “I'm sure that they'll appreciate it. I know that I will.”
The Grand Master hid a yawn behind his hand. “Good night, Son. I'll see you in the morning.”
Jaymes watched as his father walk off, then returned to his paperwork. Sometime after midnight, He was finding it hard to stay awake, and decided to take a walk. As he stepped outside the tent, he was stopped by one of the sergeants, who handed him a steaming mug. At Jaymes' arched eyebrow, the sergeant explained. “It's kafee. It'll keep you awake for the next six hours.” When the novitiate took the mug and sipped, the sergeant stated, “I saw Sir Patryg walking with you. Did he mention where we would be sleeping when we move out tomorrow?”
Jaymes took another sip, “He said we could either sleep in the saddle, or in a wagon.” This drew a chuckle from the sergeant.
