#26: Naomi:I have some ‘splaining to do.

Julie and Naomi had watched the Eagle fly away until it had disappeared from view. They continued to stare out over the water where it had gone for some time. Finally Naomi said “It’s gone.”

Julie looked at Naomi in feigned shock “NO!”

Naomi grinned and tousled Julie’s hair. “‘fraid so. No telling when it will return. How ‘bout I fix us something to eat? It’s been a while. “

“You go ahead.” Julie replied. “I’ll stay here for a while longer.”

So she did. She knew it was stupid but she couldn’t pull herself away. Shortly Naomi brought her some food. The two of them ate in companionable silence. Julie’s eyes kept returning to the point on the horizon where the eagle had disapeared. Hours passed, the sun set, it began to get dark.

“Are you going to stay here all night?” Naomi said. She knew better than to try to force Julie to do anything that she didn’t want to. Julie might be confined to a wheelchair but she had a whim of steel. She had inner strength.

“Yeah...I think I might.” Julie was still gazing at the horizon “ yeah...I might just do that.”

“Ok. Suite yourself.” Naomi went inside. Moments later she returned with a pillow, a blanket and a glass of hot chocolate. Julie seemed to not notice. Naomi turned away to leave.

“Thank you.” Julie said...eyes still riveted to the horizon.

“What have we here?” a strange voice said. It sounded like an old man.

“Wah?...” Julie roused herself. She hadn’t meant to fall asleep but she had. She looked around to see who had spoke. “Who?”

“Take it easy.” The voice said “I have something for you.”

Julie finally focused and found that she was talking to the same Eagle that she’d been watching for all night.

“You sound different.” She said “ What have you....oh!”

She was staring in awe at an egg...a VERY large egg. Nothing alive today could lay such an egg...it must have been a foot and a half long...and proportionate in girth.

“is that...” she started to say.

“yup” The Eagle said. “ We had to take rather drastic measure..think of it as a fully integrated intensive care unit. The baby had been born premature. It’s a miracle that it survived as long as it did. Oh...excuse me. Where are my manners? I’m Shelby Winslow...some folks call me the ‘wiz’ or the ArchMage.”

The Eagle did a little bow.

“But you sounded different yesterday...or was it the day before? I’ve lost track of time.” Julie said then she shouted.”Naomi! Your boy friend is here!”

She turned back to the Eagle and whispered “I’m teasing her. It get’s her goat when I say that. I hope you don’t mind.”

“Er...I...I’m at a loss for words.” Shelby actually was. He had very little experience with women...especially young ones..

“HE IS NOT!”...Naomi said as she appeared on deck...”oh.....er...hi!”

Shelby reevaluated his opinion. He MIGHT just make an attempt to get along with THAT gal...but not just now.

“Hi...” he said rather gruffly...more so than he had intended.” As I was explaining to Julie here about the baby?”

“It’s in an EGG?” Naomi exclaimed.

“Don’t get excited!” Julie said “It’s a field expediate intensive care unit...neonatal style.”

“That’s actually quite right” Shelby said, still somewhat flustered. Naomi was drop-dead gorgeous...and what she was wearing, barely wearing, didn’t help his composure one bit.

Naomi must have realized the effect she was having on him. Then she realized what she was wearing...how LITTLE she was wearing.

“I gotta go.” she said as she turned and practically ran to the door. “I’ll be right back.”

Shelby watched her go...yes...he had some re evaluating to do.

Almost instantly Naomi returned...wearing a huge fuzzy bath robe.

“You were saying.” Julie grinned at Naomi then turned to the eagle. “how come you sound different?”

“Different operator.” Shelby replied.

“Oh. “ Julie replied. She was rather disappointed . She’d hoped for something more exotic.

“What is THAT” Naomi shouted and pointed at something in the water.

“Ah...that will make it so much easier” Shelby replied. “That’s the supply drone.”

“It looks like a catfish!” Julie said

“A rilly, rilly, RILLY big one” Naomi said.

“It’s got a lot of supplies” Shelby told them. “You’re gonna need them. Now if I may I have some ‘splaining to do.

it's hard to tell what’s true or when they are lying isn’t it? It seems that they are more interested in influencing public opinion than they are reporting the facts.
