Amelia and the blind boy - Chapter 1

He woke up as the sunlight stroke his face trough the window. The sun was slowly climbing over the hills. Tired he raised his arms above his head as a yawn escaped his mouth. Suddenly he remembered that this was the day he had been waiting for, this was his 18th birthday.

He turned around to look at his nightstand, a small picture of him and his dad that had his arm around him, never failed to bring back memories. He wasn’t taller than his dad at that time, so the picture had to be at least 2 years old. His dad was holding a shield in his right hand, there were a dragon imprinted in the shield. The dragon was on its hind legs and spreading its wings and looking towards the sky.

The shield was a symbol, a symbol that he had looked up to for a long time. Today was his time to walk in his fathers footsteps.
He quickly pulled on his pierced, brown pants and the same shirt he wore yesterday. The floor was still cold, as his bare feet touched the ground. He ran out of the door, but turned around as he heard his mother say “You forgot something” she said with a warm voice only a mother can do.

He ran back to her in the doorway, opened his arms as he put his arms around her. The thought of not knowing what was going to happen didn’t really strike him – until now. Stories have told that the ones, who do not make the trail, will be sent on a long journey to prove that they are worthy of joining the army.

“Don’t worry I’ll be all right” he said as he hugged his mother tight. A tear rolled down his mothers’ cheek and she couldn’t help it. She knew how much he wanted this, but she was afraid of losing another dear one.
She handed him an apple as their eyes met, he grabbed the apple and took a bite “Thanks mother”. He smiled at her and nodded.

As he ran towards the ceremony place he looked back as his mother, he felt this knot inside his stomach growing. The feeling of letting down his mother almost overruled him. Leaving so short time after they lost their husband and father was not easy – But he knew that becoming a part of the army would make his father proud.

His feet quickly made it to the city, and he could no longer see his home. The long street, full of uneven bricks, led up to where he was going. The old bookstore was just about to open as he passed it. The smell of freshly baked bread hit him as the baker opened his window on the other side of the street.

In the tallest tower in the city of Khaltan, was a huge bonfire that was just about to be lit. The bonfire was visible from the whole city. One of the monks where climbing up the ladder towards the top of the tower, as they did at every morning at sunrise.

As he got closer to the ceremony place, he could hear people mumbling. It was a huge open space, with a scene that was raised above the ground. There were 4 enormous pillars that were holding a roof that was right above the scene. A line filled with boys around the age of 18 where forming its way in towards a small hut. He put himself in the back of the line, just waiting for what was going to happen next.
