introduce a low cost Cargo Tank
Chemical carriers could benefit from inexpensive welding.
New welding techniques could improve the ease with which stainless steel is joined in chemical tankers.
Laser welding will soon be used to join sheets of stainless stell in the lining of internal cargo tanks of large,ocean-going chemical carriers.
Initial trials by kvaerner using a Nd:YAG laser with a fibreoptic beam delivery system prodused favorable corrosion and mechanical results in cases where both S31653 and S32205 duplex stainless steels were used, according to N.A.McPherson and D.Doig of Kverner Govan Ltd.in Glasgow,Scotland.
The mechanical and corrosion requirements were met on a 7-millemetre-thick joint, the two engineers reported recently in stainless steel world.
Welds in chemical carriers do not require the same impact resistance tha offshore wellding applications requinre. Therefore, the welds can be accomplished using these less expensive techniqoes.
