We need your feedback! How should we classify accounts on Steem?

in #feedback7 years ago (edited)

How do we know if an account is plankton, minnow, dolphin, shark/orca or whale? The @SteemSmarter team is trying to figure it out and wants your feedback!

Please re-steem to reach maximum community feedback

Feedback #1 - Shark instead of Orca?

We thought an "Orca" is a confusing animal since it looks too similar to a whale (and is called a "killer whale"). We considered what is between a whale and a dolphin conceptually – and decided to use Shark instead. Which do you like better?

Which do you like better: Shark or Orca?*

Feedback #2 – How do we define the "fish level" for each Account?

In Version 2 of the "Daily Winners Report" we will introduce statistics based on an Account's SP weight. We all familiar with this concept as plankton, minnow, dolphin, shark, whale, etc.

We've found some issues with the current community standard regarding how these Account "fish levels" are weighed, and we want to present an updated measurement on how these standards are evaluated. We call this new metric our "Fish Scales" because it shows the weight of each Account's potential voting power.

We've used the current Steem and SBD prices to help determine how much a 100% upvote at 100% VP would result in for each fish type, and scaled our plankton / minnow / dolphin / shark / whale metrics to reflect current Steem Power (including SP delegated in and out), not the total VESTS in the Steem platform like other reports.

Do these look correct? Would you classify yourself the same or different?

Feedback #3 – Delegated SP (include or not?)

I've noticed that most other apps/platforms using the standard way of evaluating an Account's fish weight was only using the SP native to the account. This means any SP delegated to or from (in or out) wouldn't be included.

  • If a whale delegates 99.9% of their SP, then in our opinoin they are no longer a whale, but maybe a minnow.

  • If a minnow is delegated 40,000 SP, then they are now a Dolphin.

Do you agree that SP delegation should impact an Account's classification?

Steem smarter, not harder ...

Sort:
  1. I've like the Orca name as it kind of sounds "pre whale" to me. Shark, though a super awesome animal, does have a negative connotation with a lot of people and so that label may be twisted into, "They are out to eat everyone. They must have devoured others to get where they are." etc.
  2. Makes sense, but categorizing based on VESTs and doing all the USD conversions for those VESTs should ultimately be the same thing, right? I still like the USD approach though as it makes it more concrete.
  3. I like the idea of factoring in delegations. Most people are interested in the voting influence, and that's all about net SP after delegations. That said, I also see the value in knowing someone is "a whale" even if they are delegating out to a bunch of other people. Within 7 days, they could go right back to being a "real" whale. Maybe you could use "effective" labels? As in, they are an "effective" dolphin but an "actual" whale (using an example where they delegated out a big chunk of their SP.

Thanks @lukestokes.

  1. Ok, good feedback. Valid point on a shark "eating people" but an orca is already a "killer whale". Are they out to kill whales? Sounds scary. The community so far has overwhelmingly gone for shark (mostly b/c they don't know what orca is so I think we're going to introduce sharks.

  2. Yeah, Vests and SP are the same effectively, but nobody knows what Vests are unless you dev on the platform. The USD approach was just to help ppl have examples of the current vote amount in $ for current fish type. It will, of course, change due to a fluctuating Steem price.

  3. For now, we don't really call out a specific users and their fish category. It's going to be used for a more top level classification. To see what "type" of account has/is voting, commenting, etc fo both globally and inside each tag community. Something similar to this.

Here an example. Numbers are not accurate and it's just a mockup for design purposes, but should get the idea across.

So I am a dolphin.
A way to keep us busy and focus.
Shark makes sense.
I think we should be rewarded just holding SP.
Keep on steemin'

Killer whales are actually dolphins. So more reasons for Shark.

I think ranking based on effective SP is a good idea.

  1. I'm used to Orca, but a little originality won't kill anyone. You want Sharks, go for it ^^

  2. Value should be based on Vests, and traditionally you rank up by increasing it by a power of 10

  3. I'm personally not counting the Delegated Vote on it, but actually it does make sense to count it. Whatever you chose, just make sure it s clear for your users.

Thanx @stoodkev.

  1. We have decided to go with "shark". Seems that nearly everyone in this thread favored it.

  2. Vests and SP are nearly identical, but everyone has heard of SP and not Vests. Shouldn't make much of a difference. We're planning to use this scale:

  1. We've also decided to calculate using delegation and will make it super clear when we officially introduce "fish scales" once we roll out v2. Unfortunately we've found a data integrity issue with some of our metrics and need to focus on correcting it in v1 before we can roll anything new out. We've also got a really neat "tag recommender" in the works but I gotta keep it on the DL for now ;) Thx for your feedback.

I think shark is best first it is very beautiful and secondly it is better you clkassified it awesome and very greatly I appereciat eyou Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work and wishing you a nice day

I definitely like shark better. Also I think the classifications are great. I had no idea I was plankton. I thought I was a minnow. OK, more work to do to move up the aquatic foodchain.

Feedback # 1
maybe Shark better sir

Feedback # 2
For Feedback 2 I do not really understand old because based on Tinkgtan I'm in Plankton
(Maybe Slowly I'll learn to understand it.)

Feedback # 3
the Feedback 3 I agree with you where sometimes smaller fish are more aggressive than On whales

keep your information informed
I as a beginner steemit very useful with the information you provide because currently I do not have a teacher
I just read about steemit and I'm sure there's still a lot of science I have not found
I will not waste this
and I am very fond of it with this writing "Remember, we are generating these reports so that you can find more followers, earn more rewards and make sense of Steem!
you give us support to keep growing and strive for more advanced and great

apologize for my lack of regular writing because I have to use a translator to change the language

In first, Shark is the One that i would vote for, and other things you have defined is agreed by me, you and your team has done so much hard work that very less amount of errors can be found..
Looking forward to it :)

I like the idea of using shark in the place of orca. To be honest with you @ashe-oro, the term orca is a very confusing word. Please substitute it.
