WHAT IS INTERMITTENT FASTING?

Think hanging out with friends and being on a diet are mutually exclusive? You obviously haven’t tried Intermittent Fasting (IF).

There’s no debating that eating and social situations go hand in hand. Food brings people together.

As we get older, hanging out with friends becomes more and more infrequent. Don’t be that guy that can’t hang out because “I’m on a diet”. Dieting is hard enough in and of itself, don’t deny yourself a life too.

What is Intermittent Fasting (IF)?

It’s a way of eating where you restrict the consumption of your food to a certain time window.

The two governing states of metabolism are fed (anabolic) and fasted (catabolic).

  1. Within 14–24 hours of fasting, your liver glycogen gets depleted.
  2. Insulin and blood sugar levels lower, which increases the production of ketone bodies by the liver.
  3. Fat burning increases
  4. After 2-3 days already, the body shifts into a state of nutritional ketosis.
  5. Your body will be using solely fat for fuel, instead of glucose.
  6. In ketosis, you decrease protein breakdown to almost zero, which decreases muscle catabolism.

But there are other benefits of intermittent fasting

  • ‘Autophagy,’ is a metabolic pathway which removes waste material from cells and re-cycles old toxic proteins.

  • Increased fat burning – fasting makes your body burn and not store fat. In fact, metabolic rate can increase by 3.6-14% after 48-hours.

  • Improved biomarkers. Almost all of metabolic disease is positively affected by fasting. Reduced cholesterol, improved insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar levels, and protection against tumor growth.

Think about it. Humans have been fasting since the beginning of humanity.

Various religious practices use fasting. This might include Islam, Catholicism, Buddhism and others. Fasting is an important part of religious practice. As a matter of fact, fasting and meditation is frequently used for clarifying the mind and the body.
Food has not always been available.

Think about it, at what time in human history has there always been a grocery store on every corner? It is only in modern times that we have such a large availability of food. Famines occurred regularly in human history. People survive them. They wouldn’t have survived if the human body wasn’t set up to survive the fasting state.

Everyone loves Paleo or keto eating now, but think about it. How did Paleo people eat really? They live their lives every day gathering berries or vegetables along the way. They would actively engage in hunting animals. However, they wouldn’t catch an animal every day. They would eat meat when it was available and they would eat greens when they were available. Sometimes, they would not find food. Sometimes, they wouldn’t eat. Fasting was normal. It just happened when they didn’t find food.

If you want to ease into fasting, getting on a program will make it much easier and more effective.
