Here's How You Wear a Denim Dress on a Red Carpet (Sorry, Britney)
Denim is the fabric of cutoff shorts for a beach day, skinny jeans you wear for girls’ night out, and the oversize overalls you throw on for moving day. And while denim can absolutely be dressed up, it’s typically not worn in a formal setting like, say, a major red carpet event. But Yara Shahidi’s iteration of the classic for the BET Awards is one of our favorites to date. Sorry, Britney Spears—there’s a new noteworthy formal denim dress in town.
Shahidi, who received the YoungStars Award, was the only woman who chose the traditionally everyday fabric for the event. Specifically, she wore a ruffled Jonathan Simkhai design that featured frayed edges and slight distressing here and there. Shahidi made her look feel even more special with a feathery heel in a complementary indigo hue and touch of shine via Jennifer Fisher earrings.
While celebrities like Spears (at 2001’s American Music Awards with date Justin Timberlake) and Kendall Jenner (at this year’s Cannes) have worn formal denim in interesting ways, Shahidi’s sleek look nods to the fabric’s casual nature while delivering an elegant, edgy final result.
Take a look at what Shahidi wore below.
