Terminologies used in Tailoring

Hello steemians, hope you all had a wonderful week, am so happy to be here again is been a while. Today we are going back to learning the basics in fashion.

Tailoring is as old as man, it is a old profession with diverse and culturally rch history. I know most of us must have been hearing different terms in fashion designing and you will be like what are they saying.

Today am going to be revealing some of the secret in tailoring for better understanding.

Here is a list of tailoring terminologies to make you to be more informed with the world of fashion and not a novice.

Dolly:

A piece of wet material used to dampen a fabric for pressing.

Darning:

This is a sewing technique specially used to sew or repair lossed or worn areas of a cloth by making use of only needle and thread.

Goose Iron:

Hand iron that is heated on a naked fire it is heated without electricity it is popularly known as coal iron or stove iron.

Binding:

Binding refers to stitching of the trouser to hold it from constant movement on the trouser against the shoe even without hemming or turn-ups.

Gorge:

This is the part where the collar is attached to the dress (the neck region).

Draft:

It simply means the part of the fabric where the measured plan is drawn or sketched.

Made to–measure:

A dress made for a customer to meet their desire I.e it fits perfectly to their requirement.

Darts:

It is mostly found in women’s dress, blouse or skirt, it is the part that is folded inside around under burst to the upper hips side to enhance the wearer’s fitness.

Clapham junction:

This is a paper used to draft or craft designs.

Double breasted:

Double breasted is a style of sewing a coat, jacket or top, it is sewed by lapping one edge or side of the front side well over the other, it is fixed together by double row of buttons.

Basting:

Sewing of dress with long stitches to hold the front and back of the dress together sometimes this type of stitch is used for practice or temporal sewing.

Cuff:

It serves as trimming used to prevent fraying of materials , it is mostly used at the buttom of the sleeve.

Interlining:

This is the material that is placed in between the linen and the main fabric sometimes to give the dress more fitness or to provide warmth.

Hems or hemming:

It refers to edge of the fabric that needs to be sewed inward to prevent raveling

Codger:

A designer who specializes in designing old suits.

Balance:

It means amendment of the back and the front of the garment after sewing to meet a person’s shape.

Alteration Hand:

A person who specializes in making adjustment and amendment to cloths at the final stage of sewing.
