Is Fast Fashion the only Cheap Fashion???
I think it is safe to say that anyone who is into fashion knows what "Fast Fashion" is. But in case some of you don't know, "Fast Fashion" is the moniker of the cheap ready to wear brands usually of knock offs. The clothing is cheap, not well made and essentially disposable. But the main issue with "Fast Fashion" is the slave labor. You heard that right, modern day slavery. Workers are given what is equivalent to pennies for each garment completed, often working without breaks, food and occasionally locked inside the factory.
Sadly, "cheap" brands like Forever 21 are not the only brands that use slave labor... Nike, Calvin Klein, H&M, Tommy Hilfiger among others...
What can we do to stop this? A lot! But it means a return to quality, and losing the label.... Or does it?
There are many small businesses that make quality clothing that is both ethically sourced and made. A few, affordable, brands are:Patagonia, Pact, ABLE.
But the issue is, much of the clothes goes to landfills after the owners dislike it or simply worn away. Can anything be done about this? Yes! But it takes a bit of ingenuity and a bit of work. More on this next time! 😉
