What are the cerebral hemispheres?

The brain is made up of two halves, the right half called the right hemisphere and the left half called the left hemisphere.

Both hemispheres are connected to each other by a structure called Calloso Body, formed by millions of nerve fibers that run throughout the brain.

Thanks to these fibers, the two hemispheres are continuously connected.

Each hemisphere is specialized in different functions, hence one of the fundamental aspects in the organization of the brain is the functional differences that exist between the two hemispheres, since it has been discovered that each of them is specialized in different behaviors.

It is also worth knowing that there is an inverted relationship between the two hemispheres and our body. Therefore, the right hemisphere is responsible for coordinating the movement of the left part of our body, and the left hemisphere coordinates the right side.

Functions of the right hemisphere

The right part is related to non-verbal expression.

It is demonstrated that spatial perception or orientation, emotional behavior (faculty to express and capture emotions), faculty to control the nonverbal aspects of communication, intuition, recognition and memory of faces, voices and melodies are located in it. The right brain thinks and remembers in images.

Several studies have shown that people in which their dominant hemisphere is the law study, think, remember and learn in images, as if it were a film without sound. These people are very creative and have a very developed imagination.

Functions of the left hemisphere

The left hemisphere is dominant in most individuals.

It seems that this half is the most complex, it is related to the verbal part.

In it there are two structures that are closely related to the linguistic capacity of man, the "Broca Area" and the "Wernicke Area" (areas specialized in language and exclusive to the human being).

The specific function of the "Broca Area" is the oral expression, it is the area that produces speech.

Consequently, damage in this area produces aphasia, that is, it makes it impossible for the subject to speak and write.

The "Wernicke Area" has as its specific function the understanding of language, since it is the receptive area of speech.

If this area is damaged there is a difficulty in expressing and understanding the language.

In addition to the verbal function, the left hemisphere has other functions such as analysis capacity, ability to make logical reasoning, abstractions, solve numerical problems, learn theoretical information, make deductions ...

Is there a dominant hemisphere?

The hemisphere that has been most studied has been the left, since most studies suggest that it is the dominant hemisphere.

It seems that the right hemisphere dominates the left hemisphere, and in the left hemisphere the right hemisphere.

But this does not mean that both left-handed and right-handed people can not develop the non-dominant hemisphere better, since, as has been said before, both are connected.

In fact, people who have a highly developed brain, use both hemispheres simultaneously.
