Sisters… An Unbreakable Bond
I truly believe that the bond between sisters can never be broken, no matter the changes and challenges in life. Our sisters know us as like few others do… they can be our role models, our best friends and our worst enemies (for about 10 seconds at least).
Most people will never know another human being for as long as they know their sisters. Whether you fought constantly while growing up, lost touch for a period of your adult lives or remained incredibly close and connected from day one… You are never alone, you know you have a friend for life.
“A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost.” – Marion C. Garretty
Not every girl is lucky enough to have a sister, but if you do, you know what a special relationship it is. It’s hard to explain, but there’s just something about having a sister that makes you learn a lot about yourself, and people in general.
I have three sisters, yes that’s right… three… Four girls, one household.
There are certain things that you get used to when you grow up with three sisters – the bathroom is never available, there is never enough hot water, facing daily hysterical outbursts and tantrums over borrowed clothes and make-up, tallying up who gets the most attention, crazy clothing shopping spree’s, playing dress-up, your mother forcing you to wear the same outfits on family outings (the “Dalmation” day still haunts me), sharing, fighting over mom’s jewelry box and the ability to communicate by using only facial expressions and body language… (this is a dangerous weapon, not to be messed with.).

Nadia arrived on 16 October 1994…a chubby little ginger baby who changed my life forever. Suddenly I had to share things, including attention (and I love attention). She was the queen of tantrums, and if she got angry you just knew you better start running! (Oh how I love to make her angry…). All that said, she is my best friend.
A couple of years later we welcomed another sister, Lizbe (16), the sensitive soul. The poor child, Nadia and I used to play tricks on her and tease her all the time – but we love her dearly.
The last one, Wilmè (9) the tomboy, came as a bit of a surprise… to be honest, when my mom told us she was pregnant we didn’t believe her until she dragged us along to one of her doctor’s appointments. I can’t explain it, but the arrival of Wilmè saved our family when we did not even know we needed saving… she lit up our lives in ways I still don’t fully understand. My sisters have taught me so much about myself, ultimately, they taught me how to be a better person, a better wife and a better mother.
Today is Nadia’s birthday… she is turning 20 and it shocks me to my core. Just yesterday she was a little brat, now she is a woman. Happy birthday, my little sister.
A sister is someone who loves you from the heart,
No matter how much you argue you cannot be drawn apart.
She is a joy that cannot be taken away,
Once she enters your life, she is there to stay.
A friend who helps you through difficult times,
Her comforting words are worth much more than dimes.
A partner who fills your life with laughs and smile,
These memories last for miles and miles.
When she is by your side, the world is filled with life,
When she is not around, your days are full of strife.
A sister is a blessing, who fills your heart with love,
She flies with you in life with the beauty of a dove.
A companion to whom you can express your feelings,
She doesn’t let you get bored at family dealings.
Whether you are having your ups or downs,
She always helps you with a smile and never frowns.
With a sister you cannot have a grudge,
She is as sweet as chocolate and as smooth as fudge.
Having a sister is not just a trend,
It is knowing you can always turn to her, your best friend.
