Fallout Character Creation is actually very important on how hard or easy the early game will be for you.

Traits - I always choose Gifted and Bloody mess as these typically have a game benefit followed by a hindrance but if your play style never involves the negative aspects its more than worth it.

Small Guns, Lockpick and Speech are my usual go to skills other important skills are First Aid/ Doctor and Energy Weapons(end game).
