A prodigy of Jesus in the bible: Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted. Matthew 15:28
The Gospel of Saint Matthew tells us a story of how our Lord Jesus healed a girl through her mother's faith. Jesus, the gospel tells us, came into the world first of all as a good shepherd to call the lost sheep of Israel. But a Samaritan woman asked Jesus for mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) because her daughter suffered a lot, and she knew that Jesus did miracles.
The Samaritans were people in rivalry with the Jews, and hostility between the two groups was a daily occurrence. The Samaritans had been brought by Nebuchadnezzar, tyrant of Babylon, after the deportation of the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Israel.
At the insistence of the woman, Jesus was amazed by her faith, blessed her, and worked with love (Agape) a prodigy. With this sign, Jesus made it clear that the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of God's perfections, was not destined only for the Jews but for all people of good will who with a great faith, fear God.
With these beautiful words, the Gospel of Saint Matthew tells us of the encounter of Jesus with the Samaritan woman:
"Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, ´Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.´
Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, ´Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.´
He answered, ´I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.´
The woman came and knelt before him. ´Lord, help me!´ she said.
He replied, ´It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to the dogs.´
´Yes it is, Lord,´ she said. ´Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table.´
Then Jesus said to her, ´Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.´ And her daughter was healed at that moment." Matthew 15:21-28.
