What to do with Facebook?
I remember once that someone told me a story about a Conquistador that upon arriving in South America, burned the boats that they in which they had arrived. This was to make the point to the men under his command, and perhaps to himself, that they had made a full commitment to conquer this "new world".
I sometimes think I should take such an approach to my Facebook account. After all, I do not even know most of the people I follow, and I am altogether uncertain about how much my "friends" actually see, or read, even if they do see it in their feeds.
So here are some different plans, each with their own strengths and considerations.
1) Delete my Facebook account.
Which would make a definitive line in the sand for me and stop siphoning time and effort from my contributions to Steemit. The problem with this is there are actually a few real life connections including childhood friends without which I have no other connection.
2) Delete all the Facebook accounts I don't know.
This is something I've thought about since before Steemit. In some sense, there is no reason to do the exercise, after all these people probably don't read my post and probably would not notice if I was dead. Much less if I changed our status on Facebook.
3) Keep Facebook to promote Steemit
This sounds reasonable, but how effective has it really been? Well, its been entirely ineffective. I've been promoting it weekly since I started here with zero converts.
Hey, I still don't know what I am going to do.
Please share your thoughts below. Did you delete your Facebook account?
I feel the same way about Twitter. On the one hand it has a massive outreach for content creators (whom i work with); on the other hand, every day it moves toward more and more pulls for censorship.
FB i deleted awhile back (even my socks that i used just to see pictures or w/e). I just told people what was up and tried to find them something that worked for them (even if it was just email)
steemit is very niche. It has a lot of potential though, and I think it's an experiment to see what another big platform could look like or integrate. That's the thing about the open source (or near FOSS) alternatives. It's never really permanent, it's always evolving. Trying to get the mainstream (including fam) is like pulling teeth, you might just end up compromising for them. Hope that helps.
Facebook still has some reasons to keep it around. Checking your feed is not one of them, though. I use it for group chat with family and friends, sending quick videos or pictures that are too big for texts, and I share photos of my son in a group so anyone in that group can see what my son is up to even if they aren't close (I live far from my whole family). Steemit is not there yet because Facebook has a huge head start. Hopefully someday we can all pull the Facebook plug because steemit has caught up and has all the same features.
Steemit will never be the new facebook, because it makes everything public. It's more a blogging community than a social media. But I moved my whole family to Diaspora - and there are other sites that can give you the same privacy - Friendica for example.
Can be a bit of a bother to move them though :)
Yeah the problem is moving people to something else. Most people are addicted and can't give it up whether they know it or not. That leaves the rest of us to either spend our time and energy trying to convert people to something they aren't willing to switch to or use Facebook to stay connected online to family and friends. I couldn't be bothered to use my time trying to convert people so I guess I'm forced to log in every now and then.
No, it's a hassle. But I had some help from my brother and my daughter - it is mainly about the content actually. If all the family-business is on another server that's where people go, and it takes a lot of work to turn that ship around. But today it's done, and the Diaspora instant is where all the family stuff goes - free from Facebook's Stasi-archiving.
Facebook is a medium that wil die out. They are abusing members info left and right. There are allready countries that are talking about removing acces to facebook.
The free-market will take care of Facebook. If only there was a way to block the access of government.
I left Facebook. I do not think we should attract the community of Facebook because we will not get there but Reddit.
How about the Wordpress people?
Just leave, it really isn't possible to promote Steemit on Facebook anyway. A year ago they limited all posts that had links to Steemit in them - probably because it was a competitor.
Best thing is not to buy into the whole tale they have created, but you can make one last post telling that you are going to better alternatives :) Then quit.
I don't use my facebook account as often.
I think it would be a good idea to keep your facebook account now. We may as well use our existing social media platforms to advertise their demise(steemit of course) We never know, as steemit grows other platforms may adopt some certain features from the site or introduce something to retain their followers.
What are you planning to do @neopatriach
I made my move. I stripped out everyone i don't really know, that don't interact with my post, or part excellent content. That cut me down to a reasonable number.
