I agree with your point that, given how untrusted facebook has become, the adoption rate will be far lower than other companies.

Especially for any of those groups that Facebook wants to call "hate" groups, or otherwise find themselves shadow-banned or removed from the platform altogether. I can't imagine many people wanting to opt into a risk that a person might offend zuck and find themselves robbed of their wallets for some "community guideline" strike.
