Even 'bad' curation will benefit Steem more than before.

in #exyle5 years ago (edited)

First off, I can't do my usual show tonight. I got an ear infection and it's a real bastard.

And after first trying the most manliest thing of just accepting my faith of never be able to hear again on the right side and cutting the whole thing off with a machete, I did eventually decide to go to the doctor and they gave me some drops, calling me a big girl's blouse and they send me home.

I hope they will do the trick. I can't stand ear pain.

The topic of my show would have been: Curation. What Else?

So much to talk about.

I had a cool insight that came to me this weekend. If it's still valid I'll discuss it next week.

It was inspired by @cryptopie who left a rather dramatic comment on my blogpost not too long ago.

The new users are affected tho because of the reward curve change. Their bread and butter of getting rewards from comments had been severely affected. I guess that they are just caught in the crossfire.

It's a warzone out there. But I understand the comment.

I replied to him saying:

I don't agree. A new user will 'grow up' in the system as it is known today. A new user will not know what Steem was like under linear. Therefore a new user will never see commenting as their bread and butter of getting rewards.

But it did make me think. What is the bread and butter of earning STEEM under the new Hard Fork?

My bread and butter have always been my blogposts.

Let's analyze the old fork first:

What was the best way to earn STEEM before HF22?

  1. Get some STEEM, Make a piece of content (quality unknown), buy votes from a bot, get more in return then cost of the vote. Sell the extra STEEM. Rinse repeat, Profit.

  2. Buy STEEM, power it up, delegate to a bot. Collect daily return. Sell for Profit or redelegate to bot.

  3. Open a Bot service. Collect 2-5% return on delegations. Sell for Profit or powerup.

  4. Buy fuckton of STEEM, Make 10x blog posts (quality unknown) a day and upvote those. Collect return for profit or power-up for more self voting awesomeness.

  5. Try to be a decent blogger, find other decent bloggers. Upvote each other. Collect return for profit or powerup.

  6. Build an amazing application, like Splinterlands, and make ppl buy stuff with STEEM. Sell for Profit or powerup.

What did this ultimately lead to? Ultimately, to more selling pressure. Because the amount of Liquid STEEM has been rising for a long time.

A.K.A more sellers than buyers.

What has improved under HF22. Let's work our way through the list.

  1. Get some STEEM, Make a piece of content (quality unknown), buy votes from a bot, get downvoted to DOOM. No extra STEEM, No-rinse and repeat, and No profit. Shit...

  2. Buy STEEM, power it up, delegate to a bot. Nobody uses the service because of 1. , no return. No selling for profit. Shit...

  3. Open a Bot service. Nobody uses Bot service. Close Bot service.

  4. Buy fuckton of STEEM, Make 10x blog posts (quality unknown) a day and upvote those. Get downvoted to DOOM, No profit. Shit...

  5. Try to be a decent blogger, find other decent bloggers. Upvote each other. Collect return for profit or powerup. (Still Valid for now).

  6. Build an amazing application, like Splinterlands, and make ppl buy stuff with STEEM. Sell for Profit or powerup.

  7. Buy STEEM and curate posts/projects/communities that will do well and benefit the platform. Sell for Profit or powerup.

So, What has become the bread and butter of the platform?

Curation is the answer (or building amazing applications).

But for most SP holders it will be curation.

It's not blogging and it's not commenting. WHAT?! I know...

Farm posting blog posts is no longer possible, too many unknown factors will influence the stability.

Content creation has become an extra and hopefully will lead to better content (communities will help a lot!) because curators should be looking for it.

Anyway, I believe that the stability factor now is curation.

But not any curation will do. If you curate bad actors, you will lose (they get downvoted eventually).

It has to be on decent actors.

Will all these decent actors be content creators? No, they will be anyone that adds to the Steem Network in a positive way is what I think.

And as a nice side effect. Those people are way more likely to keep that STEEM too.

Now curation is a touchy subject. Some would like to become the Jean of Arc of curation helping those in need and others would like to become the MC MAX 'Jordan Belfort' ROI Curator 9000 ©.

And most will be somewhere in between.

The most important lesson I'm trying to convey is who will get the STEEM is going to change regardless.

And the answer is: more STEEM will flow in the hands of the people willing to keep it.

That's a good thing.

And the next thing:

To earn STEEM as a bread and butter income you will have to acquire it. Because curation is where it's at. The more you have, the better. But you have to use it for more good than before to make a return.

In the eyes of some, selfish act's like becoming MC MAX ' Jordan Belfort' ROI Curator 9000 © are horrible but they still will end up being a greater good then it was before regardless.

And that's a good thing too.

What a swift in dynamics!

It just makes a lot more sense now to pick up some STEEM under these circumstances and ppl are doing it.

0,5 million more STEEM powered up since my last report (2 DAYS AGO here!)

If you want to keep an eye on the Vested Funds you can do it here. Currently, it's on 202 million.

Pretty cool stuff.

I was super excited to find out about the new curations rewards, because for like a year ALL I do is curate and play Splinterlands.. So for me I have been earning like 0.100 STEEM verse the 0.005 I was getting per post I curate! I could ONLY curate and earn more than I ever did posting.. It is all about finding that great content to curate!

Agreed. I post very rarely; but curate manually every day, so while I believe its great for the chain, its also great for me personally.
I've only ever pulled 1 GFL. A Beta Frost giant. Handy in Reverse Speed :)

I used to read your posts all the time brotha, but yeah I love the ol Frost Giant for the Reverse Speed or even Melee only with Shield and Trample 😝

Nice to see it work for you! Gonna spend that extra STEEM on cards?

Lol I spend way too much on booster packs! I keep trying to pull a GFL, but no luck so far 😂

Yeah, that's a tough mission! I pulled a GFL only once. It was an Alpha gold dragon.

That would probably be my most sought after card! I have a regular foil Alpha Gold Dragon, but the only GFL I have ever pulled was a GF ruler of the Seas out of the Season Rewards using Max Gold and Legendary potions!

Not a bad pull! That's still an $80 card! Man, good luck going for that BETA GFL!

Thanks brotha! You too!!

Your comparison of old and new Steem is great, thank you for that @exyle

Steem is a business platform and most of the votes are exchanged but that's ok. As for comments, I believe that they are one of the most important factors for blogging a success. Let's say as a successful blogger and investor you have your fans, you also follow a certain number of users that you respect and reward.
You don't have time to look at all the posts on Steemit, of course, there are some of them that are really high quality but not rewarded, and there are those who are average and have a lot of money. That is why someone who likes your posts but does not have a great reputation is not known to you, his chance is to establish a good relationship with you through quality comments. If he writes honest and good comments, then you will notice him, at some point you will go see his posts and then he has a chance to score. Comments are one of the main tools with which people can achieve success in Steemit. In the first place people vote for friends, for those with whom they are connected, then they vote for interest and only in third place for good post. As for me, comments are great marketing and a way to connect with other bloggers, because then you have a chance to make your blogs popular.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

That's a good point about commenting. There is long term value there separate from the monetary value.

Thanks, I hope it passes soon.

Have a nice day

Hi Exyle
I think your post is very logical. The old Steemians, who are worried about the new Steemians are looking at this situation from their point of view, not the point of view of those new ones with no history on the platform. This point is very important. I think many of the mistakes and misunderstandings I see involve not being able to see something from the other person’s perspective.

As for your comment about curation being the new bread and butter, I think you are right. I have been involved with Tribes on Steem Engine for two months and because 50/50 is what we have had from the beginning, it is “normal”, (See first paragraph above)

So powering up, holding onto as much Token as you can and curating is the main method of earning on Steem-Engine.

Lastly, I joined this platform in April 2018 and “Change” is really the only “Constant” here on the Steem blockchain, so for me To survive and grow I must change and adapt.

To me, here as in life, it’s not always helpful to label things as good or bad, “they just are”, so I adapt to survive, thrive and succeed.

I was sitting here waiting for the show to start. I am so sorry you are in pain and hope you feel better quickly!

I am so sorry for wasting your time! Next week the show should be on! And thank you!

I'm a bot. I detect haiku.

Never a waste of time. I do look forward to the show and was disappointed. But I was busy curating while I was waiting! Hope you feel better in the morning.

So far, despite my fears, I am very happy with the HF. I am doing very well curating and while I don’t post as often I’m very happy with the payouts there as well.

Since my blog has mostly morphed into running and curating contests I hope that everyone sees the value in that and I’ll never get down voted for it!

I’m happy and I’d like to buy more Steem. I’ve purchased a lot of Steem for crypto in the past but now I’d like to go fiat to Steem. Just not sure how to do so!

As for your ear I feel for you! I hate that pain too and as a big swimmer I get an infection at least once a year!

I doubt you ever get downvoted for that. But because it's DPOS you no never know. I find it best just to accept them and move on. Curation makes things a lot more stable for SP holders which I like.

I'm not sure how to go about buying Steem where you live. There must be a fiat to BTC entry somewhere and from there it's easy with @blocktrades or an exchange.

Thanks, woke up with more swelling. But no fever or anything. Hope it passes soon.

I better step up my curation game! :)

Haha, Your voting efficiency is pretty good (if you care about it). 66%.

How can I look at mine @exyle?
Thanks for the info! 🙂

Thank you! 🙂

I never knew but I’ll take it lol

Dude ear pain is a killer! I used to get those ear infections quite often. Seems like the dampness in the ear after a shower is the culprit. Now I take a Qtip and carefully use it to dry out the inside of the ear. I know what they say about never inserting it in the ear. Not saying that anyone should, just I have a no more problems.

Good luck and good take on the new situation here.

its all about supreme quality now not many will survive

A swift recovery with your ear buddy. I usually have these warm bottles that really help against the pains. A towel and heat to sleep. Curate good actors sounds great. Meeting more Steemians in another city and im so making this platform my mission! A few people said they heard of it and could actually state what steem is. A few months ago almost no one knew. It feels like big things are happening. Awesome post and nicely formatted and explained. You are so right about curation and we need more communities with active curators.
