Trench coats
The fashion icon during 1914- 1920 were heavily influenced by World War I. Before WWI, the fashion of women was taken based on Orientalism with soft draper and bold prints. With the influence of the war and the women's suffrage movement, the fashion of women became more succinct.
In that period, beret and trench coats as a representative military-style begin as a fashion element. Trench coats were designed as raincoat made of waterproof shell fabric for soldiers in WWI. Thomas Burberry invented gabardine fabric in 1879 and submitted a design for an Army officer's raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office in 1901. By trial, the British decided that the trench coat was easier for soldiers to fight in the rain, and the British decided to adopt it in 1918.
The new military style coat featured a wide collar, extra fabric at the top of the back, epaulets, and a belt. The trench coat became a fashion staple for both men and women for the next 100 years.
