A Distinctive Name "Indonesia", Raising National Awareness in 1918 [ENG-IND]

Good morning Indonesia, good morning steemian. I originally wrote this simple post with the intention of participating in the 100 years challenge event. But because of some things I was constrained to post it on time. Here is the writing I mean:

“Ven more than now, here was a lot happening in the world exactly 100 years ago. 1918 was a formidable year for events that resonated across the globe. 1918 is a great year for events that resonate around the world”.

@phillyhistory and @sndbox is so provocative opening 100 Year History Challenge. I read it from post @ mariska.lubis, a few hours before the deadline runs out. A short enough time to find interesting themes.

Taking the example of Mahatma Gandhi case in India, I wondered how the process of nationalism in Asia also grew with the onset of the World War that hit Europe. 1918, can not be separated by the emergence of the name 'Indonesia' as a form of struggle to create an independent state.

As a cluster of islands between Indochina and Australia, initially the mention of Indonesia is associated with various chronicles, both Chinese, Indian and Arabic. Later, Earl in JIAEA Magazine asserts that it is time for the people of the Indian archipelago to have a distinctive name. In his article, Earl presents two choice names: Indunesia or Melayunesia. After Earl chose the term Melayunesia, James Richardson Logan wrote the article 'The Ethnology of the Indian Archipelago', picked up the name Indunesia that Earl dumped. Replace the letter u with the letter o to make it better. So the term Indonesia was born. For the first time the word Indonesia appeared in the world printed on page 254 of JIAEA Magazine Volume 4, published in 1850:

"Mr. Earl suggest the ethnographical term Indunesian, but rejects it in favor of Malayunesian. I prefer thr purely geographical term Indonesia, which is merely synonym for the Indian Islands or the Indian Archipelago.

Although Logan does not think that this term will later be used officially for a country. Logan consistently uses the name of Indonesia in its scientific writing, gradually this term spreads among Scientists.

Adolf Bastian, publishes 5 books of Indonesian Oder Die Inseln des Malayischen Archipel as well as the results of his research during wandering in these islands. Bastian book is what popularized the Indonesian term among Dutch scholars. Although it was thought to be the birth of the term 'Indonesia' Bastian in fact took the term from the writings of Logan.

Although the name Indonesia was born in about 1850. A major milestone for this island, was marked in 1918. The use of the Indonesian name in exchange for the title 'Dutch East Indies' (Nederlandsch Indie) for the first time appeared among Indonesian students in the Netherlands. Formulated explicitly in Soewardi Soejaningrat's paper (Ki Hajar Dewantara) in his speech entitled "Het Javaansche Nationalism in Indische Beweging", Commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Boedi oetomo in Amsterdam.

The name of Indonesia is contained in a collection of Papers entitled "Soembangsih Gedenkboek Boedi Oetomo 1908 - May 20, 1918". Thus, this youth movement has made the name "Indonesia as a political attitude to fight for its independence. The early period of the emergence of national consciousness which is an important chapter in the history of the struggle for our nation.

Although this paper can no longer be included in explore 1918 challenge, but more than that, I just want to remind that 100 years ago, Indonesian youths have been convinced to choose and determine their identity, identity for their nation.

selamat pagi Indonesia, selamat pagi steemian. awalnya saya menulis postingan sederhana ini dengan maksud turut berpartisipasi dalam event 100 years challenge. Namun karena beberapa hal, saya terkendala untuk mempostingnya tepat waktu. Berikut adalah tulisan yang saya maksud.

Lebih dari sekarang, banyak terjadi di dunia tepatnya 100 tahun yang lalu. 1918 adalah tahun yang hebat untuk acara yang bergema di seluruh dunia.

Dalam artikelnya, Earl Mengajukan dua pilihan nama: Indunesia atau Melayunesia. Setelah Earl memilih istilah Melayunesia, James Richardson Logan menulis artikel ‘The Etnology of the Indian Archipelago”, memungut nama Indunesia yang dibuang Earl. Mengganti huruf u dengan huruf o agar ucapannya lebih baik. Maka lahirlah istilah Indonesia. Untuk pertama kalinya kata Indonesia muncul di dunia dengan tercetak pada halaman 254 Majalah JIAEA Volume 4 yang terbit tahun 1850:

Meskipun Logan tidak berpikir bahwa istilah ini kemudian hari akan digunakan secara resmi untuk sebuah negara. Logan secara konsisten menggunakan nama Indonesia dalam tulisan ilmiahnya, lambat laun istilah ini menyebar di kalangan para Ilmuwan.

Adolf Bastian, menerbitkan buku Indonesian Oder Die Inseln des Malayischen Archipel sebanyak 5 volume yang emuat hasil penelitiannya selama mengembara di kepulauan ini. Buku bastian inilah yang mempopulerkan istilah Indonesia di kalangan sarjana Belanda. Meskipun sempat dianggap melahirkan istilah ‘Indonesia’ pada kenyataannya Bastian mengambil istilah tersebut dari tulisan-tulisan Logan.

Meskipun nama Indonesia telah lahir pada sekitar tahun 1850. Tonggak sejarah besar bagi kepualauan ini, ditandai pada tahun 1918. Penggunaan Nama Indonesai sebagai ganti sebutan ‘Hindia Belanda” (Nederlandsch Indie) untuk pertama kali muncul dikalangan pelajar indonesia di negeri Belanda. Di rumuskan secara tegas dalam makalah Soewardi Soejaningrat (Ki Hajar Dewantara) dalam sambutannya yang berjudul “ Het Javaansche Nationalisme in Indische Beweging”, Peringatan hari ulang tahun Boedi oetomo ke 10 di Amsterdam.

Nama Indonesia dimuat dalam kumpulan Makalah berjudul “ Soembangsih Gedenkboek Boedi Oetomo 1908 – 20 Mei 1918”. Maka dengan demikian, gerakan kepemudaan ini telah menjadikan nama “ Indonesia sebagai sikap politik untuk memperjuangkan kemerdekaannya. Periode awal munculnya kesadaran kebangsaan yang merupakan babak penting dalam sejarah perjuangan bangsa kami.

Meskipun tulisan ini tidak lagi dapat diikut sertakan dalam explore 1918 challenge, tapi lebih dari itu, saya hanya ingin mengingatkan bahwa 100 tahun lalu, para pemuda Indonesia telah meyakini untuk memilih dan menentukan identitas dirinya, identitas untuk bangsanya.
