Little psychological-social experiment.

in #experiment8 years ago (edited)

Since we were kids, my brother, my cousins and I were playing a game (I will explain the rules in a bit later). I took it to the next level and decided to make a little funny psychological-social experiment. I was curious to see what happens to the picture when there are more than 4 people playing. I think, it is interesting demonstration of the selective way our memory works.

The game had following steps:

1) I drew the first picture (in this case it's a cat with aquarium and a fish)

2) First participant had to look at it for 25 seconds and try to memorize every detail.

3) I took the picture away.

4) He had to draw it from the memory as he remembered it.

5) I show the picture, which the first participant drew, to the next person.

6) That person had to memorize and draw the second picture without seeing the first one.

7) The same with the third, forth picture and so on.

I started it in December 2014 in Athens, OH, USA. It traveled with me to Ukraine and Italy.
People, who played were from all over the world: USA, Ukraine, Italy, Argentina, Mexico, Nepal, South Korea, France, Spain, Russia, Turkey, Hong Kong, Denmark, Iran, Germany, Thailand, Scotland, India. 89 participants total.

Here is a little animation to show the pictures all together. Look, what happened to the cat, fish and aquarium...

lol! de-evolution to a lungfeesh

Very good. Such a great idea. Proves how perceptions changes from on person to another. Also, how rumors evolve.

That is really cool. The cat at one point looked like a demon. Poor kitty. And I love the Nutcracker theme, by the way. It is some beautiful music.

Thanks, I love the Waltz of the Flowers :) And can you imagine, the first 10 or more participants were actual artists - my classmates in the Department of Fine Arts! They normally make amazing realistic paintings and stuff. How come it became so primitive right away? I don't know... :))

This is off the topic of the art, but back to the Nutcracker. 12 years ago I took a date to a live performance of the Nutcracker. It was such a profound performance. It really made an impact on me and I will never forget it.
