Serbia - my possible love

10. Serbia is the home land of 18 Roman emperors born here. This is a fifth of the total number of emperors who ruled Rome. To learn more and completely drawn in ancient Roman Empire time, visit Vinancium – one of the largest and well preserved cities of the Empire.

9. Novi Sad clock tower. Novi Sad is a town of aristocratic spirit and majestic architecture designed to sooth the scene before your very eyes. The clock tower of the city’s castle has an interesting story – the small clock arm points the minutes, whilst the big one indicates the hour. The local people say that this is made purposively to facilitate the people from the river ships and boats trading down the Danube river, so they would be able to see what time it is from a far distance. Isn’t it so kind of theirs!

8. Eurocrem. Serbian special delight always putting me into a dilemma Cipiripi or Eurocrem. Mhm, nooo. Eurocrem rules! Of course this chocolate palate teaser’s recipe is a secret. I’m not going to describe tastes here. I’ll tell you just one thing: If you had a lot of lovers, this is the Love of your life that will make you forget all of them instantly!

7. Vidin Kapija at Kalemegdan fortress. Belgrade is a unique town. It’s enough to spend a month there and you’re already one of the locals. I loved how people gave me directions in this big city – everything was “Go straight. You can’t miss it”. Precisely, “Samo parvo!” is one of my favourite expressions in Serbian along with “Ili jesi, ili nisi…”. It takes a wild imagination to translate this exemplary wisdom. The existence of my home town name laid on a brass plate at one of the fortress gates or kapiyas was the warmest welcome hug I have ever felt abroad. Historically my town once was within the Serbian state territory. A couple of battles later Belgrade and Braničevo fortresses were taken and included in our territory. If you refer to encyclopaedia Britanica, you’ll read that Belgrade was Serbian town for quite а short period during the time of its existence. But let me make things clear straight here. No matter how long you roam around beautiful Serbia, you’ll always crave to return in Belgrade – ancient and modern in the same time, the city is the most Serbian town one can think of…i tačka!

6. Knjaz Miloš water. „Ništa bez Knjaza“ or the story about the Serbian nobility. The country is abundant of healing water springs, nevertheless the most delicious water ever is count Milosh water. It’s good for your stomach and the positive frame of mind. A possible reason why the Serbians are always smiling when they talk…and they talk a lot. Which is nice.

5. Kustendorf – the Wooden town Cinema Festival Kosturica created. Among the celebrities you may meet during the festival days are Monica Bellucci, Jim Jarmus, Johnny Depp and many others, so take a bigger notepad to collect autographs. Previously, one of the most romantic steam trains will bring you through mountain tunnels and amazingly beautiful sceneries straight in the heart of Serbia. This is the so-called Shargan rail wagon. Hah?! How about that? Pin Drvengrad in your favourite travel destinations.

4.Đerdap. The majestic Danube river makes love with the nature at this landmark. You’ll pass by rocks and cliffs and you’ll see gates and faces carved in the rock walls. Undoubtedly, you’d like to stay with the old fishing men and spend some time by the open fire. Then trying the most tasteful fish soup. Sip grape or plum rakiya. Do I need to convince you another minute? I don’t think so.

3. The white angel. Back in the 1235 Serbia was ruled by King Stephen Vladislav I of Serbia. The popular detail of one of the best known frescoes in Serbian culture could be seen in the Mileševa monastery, Mironosnice na Hristovom grobu (Myrrhbearers on Christ's Grave). It is considered one of the most beautiful works of Serbian and European art from the High Middle Ages. It depicts the arrival of the myrrhbearers at the tomb of Christ on Sunday morning, after the events of the Crucifixion. Sitting on the stone is the Angel of the Lord dressed in a white chiton, whose myrrh-bearing arm shows the place of Christ's resurrection, and his empty tomb. Outstanding! Serbia is among the countries to live out Orthodox Christianity in real depth.

2. Skadarlija – the Bohemian quarter in Belgrade. A real jump back in time and you find yourselves on the narrow cobble stoned streets in one of the most aristocratic corners of the modern city. Knitted lace curtains, wooden balconies, chequered table cloths - such a classic - and live band musicians at the jardinières will make you feel so comfortable with the unexpected time and zone change. I’ll have pity and skip the numerous delights you can choose among in the lists of the restaurants. Serbia is gourmet!

To mention only one thing, Serbian neighbouring countries population cross the borders on daily bases to get substantial supplies of Serbian kajmak. To be honest, this is one of the reasons I’m a very keen supporter of the no-borders policy in EU. The head of Serbian favourites will make your stay in the country memorable! No! You don’t have it at home. By the moment you try it, you’ll know you don’t have such thing at home.
