The European Parliament Committee approved the launch of the EU sanctions procedure against Poland

in #eu7 years ago

The European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Internal Affairs and Justice supported the decision of the European Commission to begin the procedure for imposing sanctions against Poland.

In support of this decision, 33 members of the committee came out of the necessary 23.

"The European Parliament welcomes the decision of the European Commission to launch the procedure for Poland in the first paragraph of the seventh article of the Treaty on the European Union," the draft resolution, approved by the committee members, reads.

Recall, sanctions against Warsaw can be imposed because of violations by the Polish authorities of European principles in the conduct of judicial reform.

The resolution on sanctions against Poland will be considered at the plenary session of the European Parliament. If it is approved, the document will be submitted to the EU Council, where it can be finally approved. For the adoption of this decision, the support of the qualified majority of the member countries of the commonwealth is necessary (22 out of 27, not counting Poland itself).

The sanctions envisage depriving Warsaw of the right to vote in the Council of the European Union. If such a decision is finally adopted, this will be the first precedent in the history of the European Union.
Good luck
