I agree with you that the EU has major flaws as it stands today. Still I think the EU is the way to go, especially for smaller countries like Austria (where I live, greetings to Rotterdam!). The fact that the EU added many countries that aren't anywhere near the economic, social and political standard a lot of the founding countries expected just propelled that development in my opinion. Let's see what the future brings - hopefully a reformed Union of strong nations.
I agree that the smaller countries may have benefited from joining the EU, however it has held the other countries back.
If we go back to a Economic community I feel we can create a strong EU, without the flaws we have today.
Seeing what the future brings will cause pain, the EU has proven that it has no tendency to change itself, except for gaining more power.
