Your words - Your honour!

in #ethics7 years ago

Hello fellow Steemians!
Compliments of the season to you all.
It is rather co-incidental that I have chosen to write on this subject at this time of festivities in which many will also engage in making various promises particularly as it relates to the new year.

It is generally believed that words have power - but this truism is sadly lost to many who carelessly utter words and make commitments they have no intention of fulfilling and sometimes, even without meaning them in the first place. Unknown to many, words (either spoken or written) are actually covenants which remain binding on the parties until fulfilled. Where they remain unfulfilled, they remain unpaid debts!
I have come in contact with people who make statements of high importance only to turn around and say that they never meant what they said - claiming they were mere jokes. Do note that there is nothing like mere jokes. Your words do carry a lot of weight and therein lies your honour!

To build up our credibility, we must ensure that the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart remain synchronized and acceptable to our maker at all times - They invariably remain interwoven. God, our maker never joked with His words, so why should we?

It is part of the ethics of Insurance practitioners who proudly state that "my word is my bond" - they encourage their members to always put themselves in a position where their clients would always rely on them as they build their credibility with their words over time.

EFFECTS OF OUR WORDS
As in all we do in life, there are various effects of the words that proceed from our mouth (positive and negative). I will briefly mention some of these.
POSITIVE

  1. Words help us bond with others as we communicate/interact with them and are thus a veritable tool for socialization.
  2. Help us build personal integrity (Honour)
  3. Help to resolve conflicts and resolve naughty interpersonal issues. Like they say " It is better to jaw jaw than to war war!"
  4. Ultimately helps to increase our net worth. Speaking of networth, most of us immediately think in terms of financial networth. However, our overall credibility and honour is our intangible/unseen networth and in most cases eventually impact on our financial networth.

NEGATIVE
Where not properly deployed, they can lead to the following amongst others:

  1. Severe damage to our credibility
  2. Block our ways to social bonding and various opportunities.
  3. Promote/enlarge social strife/conflicts
  4. No one takes a serial liar seriously even when they speak the truth - damaged honour.
  5. Impoverishes those who are regularly fond of reneging in fulfilling their promises.others will eventually see them as untrustworthy, disregard and eventually distance themselves from such individuals.
  6. Remains unacceptable to God our creator and thus attract negative forces.

Fellow Steemians, as we celebrate and enter the season of promises, I urge all to be very careful with the promises we make through the words of our mouth. They do carry weight and have far reaching implications!
Thank you for reading through and happy celebrations!!!

**In the spirit of the season, I am wishing every Steemian :IMG-20171225-WA0009.jpg

Wish you the same. May the Lord continue to preserve us in the land of the living.

As small as our tongue is, so deadly it is.

Yes it is. Life and death is contained therein. Thanks for your input.
