Ethereum developers announced the postponement of the Istanbul update
Parity Tech's developer Wei Tan said "It will take us until September 6th to complete the implementation. This is due not only to the fact that we have adopted EIP late, but also to the fact that we are engaged in large-scale reworking of the code structure".
It was supposed that the block number to run the update in the test network was to be selected on Friday, August 23. Now, however, the developers will have to wait until Parity finishes the necessary improvements on their part. According to Tan, it will take 2 weeks.
Update in the main network was supposed to take place on October 4, before the Devcon conference. Under current conditions, it may be postponed until November, depending on how quickly Parity will manage the task.
At the same time, Geth's client, supervised by the Ethereum Foundation, has implemented all the necessary proposals to improve Ethereum (EIP). Currently, about 76% of Ethereum nodes are used by the Geth client and 21% by Parity.
In addition, the developers are discussing increasing gas consumption for certain activities or functions, as changing the settings can lead to failure of some smart contracts that use fixed gas values in certain scenarios.
Ethereum Foundation developer Martin Svende said: "We know that something will break down because of this, in theory. But breakdowns can be different.
Thus, the developers are discussing the permissibility of refusing some smart contracts. "The problem is that if we ruin some of the contracts and ask them to defrost, we could have a situation similar to what happened to the multisigned Parity wallets," Tan said.
In 2017, a bug in the smart contract code led to the freezing of 500,000 ETHs on Parity wallets. In this case, the problem may arise not at the level of a single smart contract, but at the level of the entire protocol Ethereum, if really show themselves bugs, which are feared by developers.
In particular, such bugs can be used to carry out attacks by filling the blocks with operations with too low commissions, which will increase the processing time of blocks.
Release of genesis-block Ethereum 2.0 is planned for January, 2020, however carrying over of Istanbul on November or, probably, later term, will not influence the second network as over these initiatives different commands work, and Ethereum 2.0 becomes independent blockchain which while in any way will not be connected with operating PoW-chain.
Its another time of postpone, i think last year we had same story and price of ethereum only went down, what do you think will something change? or bitcoin will gain another % in dominance.
