AN INSIGHT TO GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Geographic Information Systems
I want to start about my background on this course or subject, The first time I learnt about GIS is my secondary school. Mr Adegboyega who was the Geography Teacher then, introduced GIS to me and gave me some softwares to use. He gave me ILWIS and Arcgis.
The second I got to learn about GIS was the National Boundary Commission in Abuja, International Department. This GIS softwares were used for Boundary security and checking.
The Third place I learnt about the GIS is the National Space Research and Development Agency, Abuja, Nigeria. Where it is used extensively for Mapping. Private companies and commercial oriented ones patronises them. The make Images of different resolutions available when requested for.
I proceeded to Federal School of Surveying , Oyo Nigeria for a Diploma Course in Geographic In Information Systems, and I learnt a lot in the process.
GIS is a complex course and its made of components such as Man or Personnel, Computer, Software, data and so on. All these work together in other to achieve the common goal. Different softwares have ways of entering data and processing it. one of the major results of a GIS is the map. Maps could be in different form or media.
