Minister of Environment and Forestry: Freeport Still Consulting Waste Treatment

Environment and Forestry Minister LHK Siti Nurbaya said discussions with PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) are still underway related to the management of Hazardous Toxic Waste (Waste B3) in the form of tailings.

Tailings Freeport Indonesia is located in the Ajkwa stockpiling area or the Modified Ajkwa Deposition Area (ModADA) in Mimika Regency, Papua.

"Freeport is still consulting with us about waste treatment every two weeks," he said in his office on Friday (13/7).

Previously, Siti said there were 48 weak points that prevented the US mining company from managing tailings. Of the 48 points that have been resolved 35 points and still have 13 points.

"From this 13 points, I check there are seven that are almost finished as well, we will help with the tailings," said Siti.

Another problem that hampers, he continues is generally related to technology. "We keep control, we have him collect all his knowledge he, his best practice in the world, to check, he can do what, so here the concept is in the technology," said Siti.

Utilization of tailings, Siti said, could be for raw materials cement industry or other building materials. However, it needs other ministry policies, such as the Ministry of Public Works and People's Housing (PUPR), Ministry of Industry, and Ministry of SOEs.

Currently, KLHK is still studying three crucial matters in tailings treatment. First, the tailings formation that covers half the coastal area. Second, tailings utilization. Third, runoffs from embankments and mining in them.
