Communities and the weedcash experiment.

in #esteem6 years ago

Building a specific community.

Now we have all seen lots of developments happening on the STEEM blockchain over the past year. Apps, games, back-end and countless others. There is a lot happening and a lot to enjoy about what is being built. We do have issues and everybody acknowledges that fact but there has been a team of people working on solutions and improvements constantly. Lots of teams and lots of individuals to be fair.

One of the groups constantly delivering is the one containing @aggroed and @yabamatt. Between @steemmonsters, @steem-engine and now the Scotbot to integrate communities it's fair to say that they are driving development for the community.

Scotbot launch! Time to make your own custom token powered by proof of brain on Steem!

This latest development allows people to create their own community for specific groups which are backed by a smart contract platform and allows for specific token creation. It was exciting to see the first of these launch a couple of weeks ago.

Developers are going to develop and I'm sure there is lots of interest in MIRA and nodes and shit. That's what they do but they will always be in the minority. What I want from the internet is somewhere to play games, read interesting stuff and have a freedom of speech for people to express themselves. At the end of the day that is the majority of people and they want it to be quick and easy to use.

Now don't get me wrong, I like a smoke once in a while and can read a few posts about weed and growing it but in my mind a community like this has it's limitations. There is only so much content that it's going to produce and so many people that are going to be interested in it. It's a brilliant start to the project but it's a niche. It could gain a hardcore following and do very well even from an advertising perspective as there is a lot of money in the industry but I don't see it ever gaining 10m users.

So what could?
What do people want to read about?

Before STEEM I used to spend a lot of time on Wattpad. For those of you that don't know it. Wattpad is a writing site. It has 65 million users that write on it ever day for free. They do it for the love of writing and for people to comment and discuss their work. While a minority do it to get noticed and get published, in the long run most people write because they love it.

I spent hours reading and commenting on my favorite authors works and writing my own stories for people to enjoy. There was an app for the phone that worked brilliantly and let you spend hours reading stories while traveling or killing time. You could move from one chapter into the next seamlessly and people could post their stories into separate books.

Now I'm being a nerd with this, but the other thing that I always read and followed was Harry Potter. I've always had a love for the books, movies and everything involved with that world.

  • 500m Books sold for 7.7B Dollars.
  • 80 Different languages.
  • 8 Movies grossing 9.8B Dollars.
  • Theme park.
  • Multiple fan websites with millions of views.
  • 72 Million likes on facebook.

While I barely use facebook anymore one of my favorite groups to follow is Pottermore. It's a fan group with 773,939 followers that posts memes, fan pictures, canon, and fan fiction. From pictures of tatoos to short canon and sometimes long fictions the site has people sending in interesting work every day to share with it's group.

It's a group that I would love to be a part of on STEEM. A seperate group that could post stories, pictures, anything Potter related. Some of which get a huge amount of comments and add-ons since a lot of the fans are hugely dedicated and love to discuss every new theory and fan-fic.

A perfect match for the new communities as people can post almost indefinitely on a topic which has a hardcore world wide following. Earning "Galleons" (The new token obviously) for interaction and posting. Buying and selling merchandise and homemade parafenalia.

This is all a theory.

This is all an imaginary scenario where we start to gain mainstream notice and how we can take advantage of it. I love the theory behind weedcash and would love to see it applied on a larger scale. I took this example as it's one that i have a lot of time for and it's one that I know has a massive following with plenty of content that could be posted.

If we had a group like this on the chain it's where I would spend most of my time. Reading, commenting and following. I love STEEM but a lot of the content is aimed at more technical people and the crypto world in general which is always going to be the minority of people. If we want to bring in new and more diverse people then at some stage we are going to have to look at what the majority of people are interested in and give them a place to enjoy that on on the chain.

@blewitt is one of the people doing this as he has been recruiting people from the comic and fantasy world that he is interested in and could also have a huge community if there was a place for them to operate.

Just something to think about for the future.

This could be interesting to start something new and innovative. The fact is that fanbased communities are strong and could gain traction easily!

It already has a community with hundreds of millions of fans so the theory is to give them a place to go to interact and to reward them for doing it and sharing their work. Something I was thinking about this week.
