Dahulu lhokseumawe dikenal dengan sebutan kota petro dolar,dikarenakan banyaknya perusahaan besar yang tumbuh di kota lhokseumawe,seperti
- PT.ARUN LNG dengan hasil gas buminya
- PT.ASEAN dengan hasil pupuknya
- PT.KKA dengan hasil kertasnya,dan
- PT.PIM dengan hasil pupuknya
Namun saat ini kejayaan pabrik-pabrik tersebut sudah mulai hilang,karena sebagian besar perusahaan tersebut tidak lagi beroperasi,saat ini hanya PT.PIM yang masih beroperasi.
Namun kini Lhokseumawe bangkit kembali dengan adanya usaha pemerintah membangun kawasan ekonomi khusus di Lhokseumawe yang lebih dikenal dengan nama KEK ARUN (kawasan ekonomi khusus Arun).
Kawasan Ekonomi Khusus (KEK) merupakan kawasan dengan batas tertentu yang tercangkup dalam daerah atau wilayah untuk menyelenggarakan fungsi perekonomian dan memperoleh fasilitas tertentu.
Dengan adanya kek arun ini diharapkan akan memajukan perekonomian rakyat aceh terutama warga lhokseumawe.
