Statue Friday

in #esteem6 years ago (edited)

Today is #StatueFriday in the #sevendaysoutside challenge by the lovely @erikah!

My statue choice for today is located at a scenic lookout along the Trans-Canada Highway near Thunder Bay, Ontario. The bronze statue is an image of Terry Fox, running west.

Three years after having one leg amputated due to cancer, the 22-year old year old man dipped his foot in the Atlantic Ocean in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. He started his Marathon of Hope, running close to a full marathon every day as he ran toward his home, and the Pacific Ocean. He marked the spot that he stopped each night
with a small stack of rocks piled by the highway. The next morning he made sure to set out from behind the rocks. He was determined to run every inch of the distance across Canada.

After 143 days and 5,373 kilometres, Terry was forced to stop his run just east of Thunder Bay when the cancer returned and moved into his lungs.

Ever since many millions of dollars have been raised as Canadians along with people around the World have carried on the Marathon of Hope with an annual Terry Fox Run.

Great story and great photos. I especially like the first one with Terry looking skyward and the beautiful sky. Very inspirational.

I can't imagine doing what he did! Probably wouldn't have the same impact if I rode my mobility scooter across Canada!😃😉😃

Wonderful shots and incredibly sad story behind it!

Such a brave young man! He did make a difference!

Indeed he was brave and incredible resistance! I can’t imagine what he must have been going through all the while running like that! True inspiration.

love your sense for color and proportion. great angle to capture ❤👌

Thanks so much! 😘

Great people, great lesson for each of us. Sometimes our problems are nothing, especially considering people who, despite their real problem, have more positive energy than us. Incredibly wonderful man, respect.

Thank you for that :)

It looks like this statue has a very high historical value. It looks beautiful from a distance. There must be some meaning so the statue maker made him run west.

That is the way he really ran. For 5,373 kilometers until the cancer returned. He was an incredible young man.

Wow, he is truly extraordinary, I started to admire him now. Especially for you, have a nice day. :)
