The story of The Levitating Pencil Experiment.

Do you want to entertain the children, or make your friends impressed? Maybe you're a teacher and you're looking for an experiment that shows how magnets work, and why they do what they do! A little bit of this knowledge flashed through my mind, and I'm sure it will also affect those who watched you! You can pass through it as a cool magic trick, though there's a good reason why the pencil "floats" as it is.

I know from experience that kids love to play with magnets, which come in different shapes and sizes. While they enjoy the fun times they get from them, they may know what a real magnet is, or how it performs. This demonstration will help them understand this concept, especially if only a few theories, for example:

Five Things You Should Know About Magnets:

1. The magnet has two opposite ends, called the poles. The poles at one end of the treatment are called the north pole, while the other end is called the south pole.
2. Each of these opposite ends pulls the opponent's pole.
3. The invisible magnetic field surrounds the magnet.
4. The north pole of the magnetic point leads to the north pole of the Earth and the south pole of the magnetic point leads to the south pole of the earth, this is because the Earth itself has a considerable amount of magnetic material in it and is considered a very large magnet.

Experiment: Make your Levitate Pencil

This very fast and easy science experiment is the best way to use visual help to explain how poles are opposite to magnetically attractive, while the same poles repel each other. To perform this nice "trick" you need the following items:

• Pencil
• Six rounded magnets with a hole in the middle (big enough for your pencil to fit)
• A piece of foam
• The ribbon is sticky

Instructions:

• Take your pencil and wrap some sticky tape around the two opposite ends.
• Work your pencil through the holes of two round magnets and then let each of the magnets rest on one of the sticky taped sections.
• Make four holes in your piece of foam, for the other for magnetic to be placed in to. The magnets in the foam need to be spaced out to match the spacing of the magnets on the pencil (see image below as an example).
• Take your piece of plastic (CD case covers work well) and pierce it into your foam board, at one of the ends.
• Take the pencil with the magnets and place it over the four magnets on the foam board, with the sharpened side of the pencil touching the plastic divider.
• Watch as the pencil hovers in the air!
