Ayasofya, bir zamanlar yüzyıllar boyu çeşitli dinlere hizmet eden bir ibadethane idi. 537 yılında inşa edildiğinde Konstantinopolis Patrikliği’nin ev sahipliği yaptığı bir Yunan Doğu Ortodoks bazilikası olarak başladı. 1453’te cami haline geldi, 1931 yılına kadar bu şekilde kaldı ve kapatıldı. 1935’te müze olarak yeniden açıldı.
