Coffee Exports Reach Rp 6.7 T, Menperin Will Continue Dongkrak Industrial Competitiveness

The Minister of Industry of Airlangga Hartarto attended the coffee harvest and coffee business meeting at Temanggung, Central Java, on Tuesday (8/5). Airlangga wearing yellow batik was greeted with sumringah by the farmers and business actors coffee there.
Airlangga said the coffee processing industry sector contributes significantly to the country's foreign exchange. The value of exports reached US $ 469.4 million or Rp6.7 trillion in 2017. The number is up 10 percent over the previous year.
"The Ministry of Industry continues to actively encourage the development of coffee processing industry throughout Indonesia in order to further increase its added value so as to spur the economic growth and prosperity of the people," said Airlangga.
According to Airlangga, exports of domestically processed coffee products are dominated by instant coffee, extracts, essences and coffee concentrates spread to several major export destinations in ASEAN, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
The positive export performance of coffee is due to several factors such as increased productivity in the industrial sector and rising commodity prices. "Therefore, we intensively boost the competitiveness of the national coffee processing industry to be more competitive in the global arena," he said.
Moreover, Indonesia is the fourth largest coffee-producing country in the world after Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia. This is a potential development of coffee processing industry in the country.
Indonesia's coffee production of 639 thousand tons in 2017 or 8 percent of world coffee production with a composition of 72.84 percent is robusta coffee and 27.16 percent of arabica coffee.
In addition, Indonesia also has various types of specialty coffee known in the world, including kopi luwak with flavor and aroma typical of geographical indication which is the advantage of Indonesia.
Up to now, there are 22 Geographical Indications for Indonesian Coffee, including Gayo Arabica Coffee, Arabica Coffee Toraja, Robusta Pupuan Coffee, Koopji Sumatran Arabica Coffee, Liberal Coffee Tungkal Jambi and Liberika Coffee Rangsang Meranti.
"We also appreciate the steps of the Government of Temanggung Regency, because there are already two Geographical Indications for coffee from Temanggung that have been registered, namely Arabica Coffee Sindoro-Sumbing Java and Robusta Temanggung Coffee," said Airlangga.
In order to spur the development of the coffee processing industry in Temanggung, Kemenperin has provided machinery and equipment for post-harvest coffee since 2015, including coffee fruit peeler, coffee bean sorting machine, roasting coffee machine, coffee machine, and Espresso coffee machine.
"The aid is expected to support the quality of coffee processing in each value chain, so that Temanggung coffee can grow and get a name in the international world," said Airlangga.
